After your tour of the city, you’ll head back to the airport and fly to Cuzco, where the heavy breathing portion of your adventure begins. ¡Buenos días, amigos! Welcome to Cuzco, the gateway to the Sacred Valley and former capital of the Inca Empire. This UNESCO World Heritage site blends Incan and colonial architecture, creating a unique cultural landscape. Cuzco sits at 11,200 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest cities in the world. Make sure to drink lots of water throughout the day and during your 2.5-mile ascent to Q'enco and onto other ruin sites like Tambomachay, an Incan site famous for its ceremonial baths.
Cuzco ruins hike
- Physical intensity: 3 out of 5
- Distance: 2.5 miles
- Elevation change: 850 ft gain
Start your hiking tour at the impressive Sacsayhuaman ruins, which you’ll enter with your Tour Director. As you make your way uphill, you'll stop at the mysterious Q'enqo temple. Soon after this, you’ll give your legs a break on a quick bus ride to Puka Pukara, a red granite fortress that once guarded the road to Cuzco. From here, you’ll finish your hike up to the ceremonial site of Tambomachay, an Incan site featuring intricate aqueducts and believed to be dedicated to water worship. This hike is mostly uphill, so get ready for some Incan stair climbing and, of course, some epic views of Cuzco Valley.

- Visit several important Incan archaeological sites, like the Sacsayhuaman fortress and Puka Pukara, on your way up to Tambomachay.

Sacred Valley2 nights
Day 4: Misminay community visit, Misminay to Moray Incan Terraces hike & Maras Salt Mines visit

Have you ever tried chicha? Have you ever heard of chicha? This fermented corn beer has been quenching Andean thirsts for centuries, and today, you’ll get to sample some during a visit to the indigenous community of Misminay. This rural community of 120 families preserves their ancestral traditions and sacred connection to nature. And by visiting them, you’re not only learning about their culture, but you’re supporting their community in the process. You’ll also hike nearly 2 miles across the Sacred Valley. Rich in fertile soils that supported the ancient Inca empire, this valley is full of old-world villages, terraced hillsides, and archaeological ruins. Nestled between Cuzco and Machu Picchu, the valley’s breathtaking landscapes make it a crucial part of any Peruvian adventure.
Misminay to Moray Incan Terraces hike
- Physical intensity: 1 out of 5
- Distance: 2 miles
- Elevation change: 95 ft gain, 833 ft loss
Starting at the Misminay community (12,000 ft), you'll begin a gradual descent until you reach the Moray ruins. Check out these concentric circular terraces and ponder their purpose. Then, board a bus for a short ride to the Maras Salt Mines, home to thousands of individual salt pools on a hillside.
- Meet local farmers and artisans in the indigenous village of Misminay, located 12,000 feet above sea level.
- Taste chicha (corn beer) and sample native snacks made with local ingredients.
- Fuel up with a picnic lunch in the village before your afternoon hike.
- Descend close to 1,000 feet on an 2-mile hike from Misminay to Moray, followed by a quick drive to the Maras Salt Mines.
Day 5: Pumamarca Ruins hike, Huilloc community visit & choice of 2 optional excursions
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
After yesterday's light descent and opportunity to acclimatize to the Sacred Valley's high altitude, your legs are probably starting to get used to all this hiking at elevation. Today you’ll wind through the scenic Patacancha Valley on your way to the well-preserved Pumamarca Inca ruins. Following the hike, you'll visit the high Andean community of Huilloc for a unique cultural experience and traditional Pachamanca lunch, which involves—wait for it—cooking things in a hole in the ground. Now that’s something you’ve probably never done back home. Later, you'll have two optional excursions to choose from at an organic farm in Ollantaytambo—a distillery tour or a coffee tasting.
Pumamarca Ruins hike
- Physical intensity: 3 out of 5
- Distance: 5.4 miles
- Elevation change: 1,545 ft gain
Starting at a trailhead in the Patacancha Valley, you’ll kick off the hike with a gradual ascent past fields, small villages, and the Media Luna terraces—eventually reaching the Pumamarca Ruins. Here you can explore the ruins and get an idea of what local life was like for the Incas living here in the 15th century. You'll then return the way you came, enjoying views of the Patacancha Valley as you descend.
- Hike 5.4 miles through the Patacancha Valley to the Pumamarca Ruins.
- Visit the Huilloc community to witness the preserved culture of ancient Peruvians, then enjoy an authentic Pachamanca lunch, cooked in a traditional underground oven.
- Choose between an optional coffee tasting and an optional distillery tour & tasting—both taking place on an organic farm in Ollantaytambo.
Aguas Calientes1 night
Day 6: Km 104 of Inca Trail to Machu Picchu hike
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Today's the moment you've been waiting (and training) for—the hike along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu! This ancient path, once used by Incan royalty and messengers, winds through cloud forests and past ruins, offering a unique approach to the Lost City. Before you start, you’ll ride the Vistadome train, with its panoramic windows and glass ceiling panels, giving you 360º views of the Andean landscape. After your triumphant arrival in Machu Picchu, you'll descend to Aguas Calientes, a charming town nestled in the valley below, known for its thermal springs and vibrant atmosphere.
Km 104 of Inca Trail to Machu Picchu hike
- Physical intensity: 5 out of 5
- Distance: 6.3 miles
- Elevation change: 2,336 ft gain
Your journey begins at Km 104 of the Inca Trail, cross the Urubamba River to begin your climb. The first part of your hike is a steep ascent through lush cloud forest, past the Chachabamba ruins towards a waterfall just before Wiñay Wayna agricultural site, which features steep agricultural terraces and majestic views of the surrounding area. Take a break to refuel with a picnic lunch along the trail before continuing uphill to the Sun Gate of Machu Picchu, Inti Punku. Pause here to soak in your first view of Machu Picchu from above, then make your triumphant descent into the citadel. Phew, that was no joke. But you made it! You won’t spend much time in Machu Picchu proper today, but you’ll be back tomorrow for some in-depth exploration.
- Ride the Vistadome train, an experience in itself, to Km 104 of the Inca Trail.
- Embark on an epic 6.3-mile hike along the final segment of the Inca Trail, stopping for a picnic lunch at the Wiñay Wayna agricultural site along the way.
- Enter the Machu Picchu citadel through the Sun Gate and just try to keep your jaw off the ground. (Note: It can be cloudy here, so sometimes your views may be obstructed.)
- Take a bus to Aguas Calientes for a celebratory dinner and well-earned rest at your hotel, a true Andean oasis nestled in lush cloud forest.
Cuzco2 nights
Day 7: Montaña Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu hike, walking tour of Machu Picchu & travel to Cuzco
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Are you ready for a great day at Machu Picchu? Before you start, a quick history lesson. What exactly is this place (besides one of the New 7 Wonders of the World)? Built around 1450 AD, Machu Picchu is a stunning ancient Inca city perched high in the Andes Mountains. Its stone citadel features intricate architecture, terraced hills, and unbelievable views of the surrounding peaks. Put simply, it’s iconic. Today, you’ll take on one of two hikes up mountains flanking the citadel. Both will be tough, but both will also reward you with insane views of the citadel and surrounding landscapes. Once you’ve finished your hike, you’ll get an in-depth tour of Machu Picchu with a local expert and learn about the Incas who built (and mysteriously abandoned) this place.
Note: Hike selection is dependent on permit availability. Both offer incredible birds-eye views of Machu Picchu.
Montaña Machu Picchu hike
- Physical intensity: 5 out of 5
- Distance: 2 miles
- Elevation change: 1,712 ft gain
After entering Machu Picchu and walking through some of the grounds, your hike begins. Montaña Machu Picchu, twice as tall as Huayna Picchu, offers a longer and more gradual climb. You'll ascend stone steps through cloud forest, reaching the 10,000 ft summit and its unmatched view of Machu Picchu far below. Take a moment to be proud of your accomplishment before heading back down to the citadel for your guided tour.
OR
Huayna Picchu hike
- Physical intensity: 4 out of 5
- Distance: 1.4 miles
- Elevation change: 705 ft gain
After entering Machu Picchu and walking through some of the grounds, you'll climb steep Inca stairs cut directly into the mountainside, some with dizzying drop-offs (hence its nickname "Hike of Death"). Take it slow and use the steel cables for support. You'll soon reach the summit and its jaw-dropping panorama of Machu Picchu, the Urubamba River, and the surrounding peaks. It’s believed that this mountain was used as a lookout point for Incan religious ceremonies. Snap some pics and rest up before making your way carefully back down for your guided tour of the citadel.
- Jump out of bed—today you’re going to Machu Picchu!
- Take in the views on your bus ride to Machu Picchu in the morning, then enter the grounds before your hike.
- Test your lungs and legs on the steep climb up Montaña Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu.
- Tour the Lost City of the Incas, including stops at agricultural cultivation terraces, the guard house, the Temple of Three Windows, and more.
- Have lunch with your group at the hotel in Aguas Calientes, then take a scenic train ride to Ollantaytambo, followed by a bus ride back to Cuzco.
Day 8: Optional Palcoyo Rainbow Mountains hike or free day in Cuzco
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
Today, the choice is yours: explore the charming streets of Cuzco at your leisure or embark on an optional adventure to the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountains (more than 15,000 ft above sea level!). While less famous than the main Rainbow Mountain, the Palcoyo Mountains offers equally stunning views and a more relaxed hiking experience. Whether you decide to wander through Cuzco's vibrant markets, visit its numerous museums, or venture out to the colorful slopes of Palcoyo, you're in for a memorable day in the Peruvian Andes. You’ll then gather back together with your fellow hikers for one final meal at a Farewell Dinner at a local restaurant in Cuzco.
- Opt for the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain hike for a unique adventure way outside of Cuzco—and one of the best photo ops of the tour. (Note: the wake-up call will be 4:30 or 5:00 am for this excursion.)
- Enjoy a free day to explore Cuzco's rich history and culture (check out San Pedro Market to sample local delicacies) if you don’t partake in the optional excursion. -Raise a glass to a spectacular trip with your fellow hikers during a Farewell Dinner on your last evening in Peru.

- When you travel with EF Adventures, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
- Travel, when done responsibly, can have an enormous socioeconomic impact on communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at small businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
- Prepare for your trip: Be aware of monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market; learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette; and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
- When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
- EF Adventures encourages travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single-use plastics. You can cut back on generating plastic waste by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
- When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
- When you come across wild animals on tour, take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart: Don’t touch or feed them, and maintain a respectful distance. The animals you encounter on your trip should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior.
- Furthermore, avoid buying exploitative animal products, like crafts made from tortoiseshell or meals such as shark fin soup.
- If you feel we aren’t meeting any of these commitments, please let us know.
