Spain Hiking: Islands of Menorca & Mallorca
9 days | 11 days with Barcelona extension |
- Physical activity
- Group size
- 5–22 travelers
Where mountains meet the Mediterranean
Spain’s Balearic Islands are far more than sun-soaked beaches and turquoise coves—though you’ll find plenty of both. This Hiking tour takes you to Menorca and Mallorca, where limestone cliffs tower above hidden beaches and ancient stone pathways wind through pine forests. You’ll start on Menorca, hiking sections of the Camí de Cavalls along the island’s southern coast past secluded coves before heading north to explore wetlands teeming with birdlife—all while experiencing the island’s quieter, more contemplative rhythm. A ferry crossing brings you to Mallorca, where the drama intensifies: the Serra de Tramuntana mountains rise sharply from the coast, their ridgelines carving through olive groves and citrus orchards. Here, you’ll walk the legendary Ruta de Pedra en Sec (Dry Stone Trail), connecting hilltop towns, historic estates, and viewpoints that stretch from mountain peaks to the glittering Mediterranean below. Along the way, you’ll taste cheese at a working farm, sample olive oil among ancient trees, and even walk paths once traveled by painters and poets drawn to these islands’ raw beauty. This isn’t a tour that skims the surface. It’s an immersion into places shaped by geology, culture, and the sea itself.

Menorca3 nights
Day 3: Fly to Menorca and Ciutadella walking tour
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
This morning, you’ll catch a short flight from Barcelona to Menorca, the quieter, more intimate of the two Balearic Islands on this tour. As you descend toward the island, you’ll see why Menorca earned its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation—its protected coastlines, wetlands, and rural landscapes have remained relatively untouched by mass tourism. Upon landing, you’ll make your way to Ciutadella, Menorca’s former capital for a guided walking tour through the historic center—past the Menorca Cathedral’s honey-colored sandstone façade and down to the waterfront where fishing boats tie up at the port. From there, you’ll head to your hotel, a beautiful rural boutique property set among vineyards and gardens in the island’s interior. Tonight, you’ll enjoy dinner at the hotel, preparing for the coastal hikes that begin tomorrow.
- Fly from Barcelona to Menorca, the first stop on your Balearic Island tour.
- Join a local guide for a walking tour of Ciutadella, seeing the Menorca Cathedral, port area, Castle of St. Nicholas, and more.
- Settle into your new hotel and gather for dinner with your group.
Day 4: Calas de Son Saura to Cala Macarella hike & optional sunset boat cruise
Included meal: Breakfast
Menorca’s southern coast is home to some of the Mediterranean’s most striking beaches—white sand, clear water, and pine forests that grow almost to the shoreline. This stretch has managed to avoid the concrete sprawl that reshaped much of coastal Spain, keeping a raw, undeveloped feel that’s increasingly rare. Today’s hike follows a section of the Camí de Cavalls, the historic 115-mile trail that circles the entire island. Originally built in the 14th century as a defense route for horseback patrols, it’s now one of Spain’s most scenic coastal paths. The route takes you through pine-shaded trails and rocky headlands to Cala Macarella, one of Menorca's most photographed coves, with opportunities to swim at multiple beaches along the way. After your hike, you’ll return to your hotel to relax before this evening’s optional sunset boat cruise from Fornells Port, complete with cocktails and snacks.
Calas de Son Saura to Cala Macarella hike
- Option A: 3.2 miles, 295 ft elevation gain
- Physical intensity: 1 out of 5
- Option B: 5.3 miles, 679 ft elevation gain
- Physical intensity: 2 out of 5
Your hike begins at Calas de Son Saura, where soft white sand and gentle waves set a peaceful tone. The coastal path reveals Menorca’s wild beauty as dense pine forests give way to open stretches with sweeping sea views. Along the way, you’ll pass coves with crystal-clear waters and elevated viewpoints where the coastline unfolds in dramatic curves. Those opting for the shorter route will stop after reaching Cala Turqueta. For those continuing, the path remains alive with the sounds of cicadas and seabirds. Everyone will meet at Cala Macarella, where you'll be greeted by one of Menorca’s most celebrated beaches.
- Choose between a 3.2-mile or 5.3-mile coastal hike along Menorca’s dramatic southern shoreline.
- Pass hidden coves like Cala Turqueta and finish at the iconic Cala Macarella beach.
- Join the optional sunset boat cruise from Fornells with local drinks and snacks, or enjoy a free evening at your hotel.
Day 5: Cheese farm tour & tasting and hike through S’Albufera des Grau Natural Park
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
Menorca’s cheesemaking tradition runs deep, particularly when it comes to the island’s famous Mahón-Menorca cheese. Production methods here have remained largely unchanged for centuries—much of it is aged in natural caves, where steady humidity and temperature give the cheese its distinctive sharp, slightly salty flavor. This morning’s visit to a local farm offers a window into this process—you’ll see how the cheese is made, from the farm’s pastures where animals graze to the cellar where the cheese ages. Afterward, you’ll head to the island’s eastern coast for a hike through landscapes that are wilder and less beach focused. The trail from Favàritx Lighthouse passes through S’Albufera des Grau Natural Park, where coastal cliffs give way to wetlands and lagoons that attract an impressive variety of birdlife. Your hike ends in Es Grau, a low-key fishing village where you’ll have free time before heading back to your hotel.
Hike through S’Albufera des Grau Natural Park
- Distance: 6.2 miles
- Elevation change: 725 ft gain
- Physical intensity: 2 out of 5
Departing from the striking Favàritx Lighthouse, built in 1922 to guide ships through one of the island’s most treacherous stretches of coast, you’ll trace Menorca’s rugged eastern coast before turning inland toward the protected wetlands of S’Albufera des Grau. The trail alternates between exposed clifftop paths and shaded forest routes. Midway through, you’ll enter the natural park’s core, where freshwater lagoons attract remarkable birds like herons, egrets, and ospreys. The path continues through meadows and pine groves, with occasional glimpses of hidden beaches. As you near the village of Es Grau, the harbor comes into view.
- Tour a local farm to see how Mahón-Menorca cheese is made, then sample award-winning cheeses and wine in the rustic cellar.
- Hike 6.2 miles from Favàritx Lighthouse through S’Albufera des Grau Natural Park, keeping an eye out for native birds.
- Finish in Es Grau with free time to explore before returning to your hotel.
Port de Sóller, Mallorca3 nights
Day 6: Ferry to Mallorca and olive oil farm tour with lunch
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Lunch
You’ll say “Hasta Luego” to Menorca today and board a ferry to Mallorca, trading one Balearic Island for another. As you approach Mallorca’s northern coast, the Serra de Tramuntana mountains come into view—a stunning landscape that dominates the island’s northwestern edge. These limestone peaks have shaped Mallorca’s character for centuries, creating microclimates perfect for olive cultivation and terraced valleys that connect mountain villages. Your first stop on the island is an olive oil estate, where you’ll learn about traditional production methods for Mallorcan olive oil. The tour includes a guided tasting of different olive oil varieties, followed by lunch featuring tapas and Mallorcan dishes made with products from the estate. Afterward, you’ll transfer to Port de Sóller, a harbor town nestled between the mountains and sea, your home for the next three nights.
- Take a ferry from Ciutadella to Alcúdia, crossing the channel between Menorca and Mallorca.
- Tour a traditional olive oil estate, learning about cultivation methods and Mallorcan olive oil production, then taste different varieties.
- Enjoy lunch with tapas and Mallorcan dishes featuring olive oil and products from the farm, paired with local wine.
- Head to your new hotel in Port de Sóller, your base for exploring Mallorca’s Tramuntana mountains.
Day 7: Ruta de Pedra en Sec hike
Included meal: Breakfast
The GR221, known as the Ruta de Pedra en Sec (Dry Stone Route), is Mallorca’s most iconic long-distance trail. This ancient network of pathways once connected mountain villages and farms, built entirely with dry-stone walls that have stood for centuries. Today’s section runs from Port de Sóller up through terraced olive groves and citrus orchards into the Tramuntana foothills. About halfway up, you’ll reach Son Mico, a stone farmhouse famous among hikers for its homemade almond cake and fresh lemonade served on a terrace overlooking the valley. For those who want to keep hiking, the trail descends into Sóller—a town known for its Art Nouveau architecture and the red wooden tram that’s been running since 1913. After free time for lunch and exploration in Sóller, you’ll ride the tram back down to Port de Sóller.
Ruta de Pedra en Sec hike
- Option A: 4 miles, 1,047 ft elevation gain
- Physical intensity: 2 out of 5
- Option B: 6.5 miles, 1,105 ft elevation gain
- Physical intensity: 2 out of 5
The trail climbs steadily from Port de Sóller, mostly on cobbled paths that are part of the centuries-old route connecting mountain villages. As you ascend, the Mediterranean stays visible below, and the path alternates between shaded stretches under pine and holm oak trees and open sections where wildflowers bloom. At Son Mico, you can pause on the terrace to sample the famous lemon meringue pie alongside the almond cake, or try the chocolate-pear tart—all made by two sisters who’ve run the farmhouse for years. For those who'd like to keep going, the trail descends through more terraced hillsides, eventually reaching Sóller’s central plaza where cafés line the streets.
- Hike 4 or 6.5 miles along the GR221, the legendary Dry Stone Route connecting Port de Sóller to the mountain town of Sóller.
- Stop at Son Mico farmhouse for a chance to buy homemade local snacks on a terrace overlooking the valley.
- Explore Sóller’s historic center and tree-lined plaza, then ride the iconic red wooden tram back to Port de Sóller for a free evening.
Day 8: Camí dels Pintors hike
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
The village of Deià sits on a hillside in the Tramuntana mountains, wedged between dramatic peaks and the Mediterranean below. For over 100 years, this village has drawn artists, writers, and musicians—the light changes constantly, the stone houses seem to grow from the rock itself, and there’s a timeless quality that explains why creative people keep returning. Today’s hike follows the Camí dels Pintors (Path of the Painters), the very route many of those artists walked while seeking inspiration. The trail takes you up through the hillsides surrounding Deià, where cultivated land meets wild mountainside and the views shift from intimate village scenes to expansive coastal panoramas. After your hike, you’ll have time to wander Deià’s narrow streets and cafés before returning to Port de Sóller. Tonight, you’ll gather with your group one last time for your Farewell Dinner—a chance to reflect on the trails you’ve walked, the islands you’ve explored, and the experiences you’ve shared over the past week.
Camí dels Pintors hike
- Distance: 5.4 miles
- Elevation change: 1,266 ft gain
- Physical intensity: 2 out of 5
Starting from Deià village, the trail climbs steadily upward on a mix of dirt paths and old cobbled sections. You’ll pass through terraces early on, then the route transitions to rockier terrain as you gain elevation. As you circle around the hillside, you’ll pass above the tiny hamlet of Llucalcari and catch glimpses of Cala Deià far below. It’s easy to see why painters and writers settled here—the landscape shifts constantly, from intimate forest pockets to dramatic coastal overlooks. The loop eventually brings you back to Deià, completing a circuit through the landscape that made this village famous.
- Hike the 5.4-mile Camí dels Pintors loop through hillside terrain that has drawn artists for generations, with hidden coves visible far below.
- Explore Deià’s narrow streets, galleries, and cafés during free time after your hike.
- Gather for a Farewell Dinner in Port de Sóller, celebrating the week’s adventures with your fellow hikers.
Flight home
Day 9: Fly home
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Your time in the Balearic Islands wraps up this morning with a 30–45-minute transfer to the Palma de Mallorca airport. The trails, coastlines, and mountain villages you’ve walked through over the past week have a way of staying with you long after you leave—and there’s plenty more to explore if you ever find yourself back in Mallorca or Menorca.
Barcelona extension
Before heading to the Balearic Islands, spend a few days in Barcelona—Catalonia’s cultural capital and one of Europe’s most dynamic cities. Stretched along the Mediterranean coast, Barcelona delivers on every front: bustling food markets, sandy beaches, and architecture that ranges from medieval Gothic to Gaudí’s dreamlike modernism. Wander through tapas bars sampling patatas bravas and pan con tomate, explore century-old shops and ateliers, or visit the Picasso Museum to see works by one of the city’s most famous residents. This pre-extension gives you time to explore the palace- and church-filled Gothic Quarter, stroll the trendy El Born District, and marvel at Gaudí’s Sagrada Família—the largest unfinished Catholic church in the world—before you meet up with your group and depart for Menorca.

Even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these 30 countries without a visa, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you’ll only need to complete the form once.

This tour is great for:
- Recreational hikers
- Those who enjoy a good workout in nature
What to expect:
- Daily mileage: 3–7 miles
- Daily elevation gain: Up to 1,300 ft
- Typical terrain: Relatively flat with more established gradients and the occasional steeper climb
Tour pacing
This is a fast-paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:
- One 1-night stay and two 3-night stays
- Most days and evenings full of included activities (more if you add excursions)

- When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
- When you come across wild animals on tour, take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart: Don’t touch or feed them, and maintain a respectful distance. The animals you encounter on your trip should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior.
- Furthermore, avoid buying exploitative animal products, like crafts made from animal parts or products tested on animals.
- If you feel we aren’t meeting any of these commitments, please let us know.
