Greece Hiking: Mount Olympus, Meteora & Delphi
9 days | 12 days with Santorini & Athens Coast extension |
- Physical activity
- Group size
- 5–20 travelers
Gods, monasteries, and the trails that connect them.
This isn’t your average Greek holiday. You’ll move through three of the country’s most legendary landscapes—from the coastal foothills of Mount Olympus to the otherworldly rock formations of Meteora to the sacred slopes above Delphi—guided by local experts who know these places as intimately as the myths that shaped them. Each day brings a different kind of discovery: hiking the ancient E4 trail toward the home of the gods, threading clifftop viewpoints and Byzantine monasteries above the Thessalian Plain, and following a pilgrims’ route from Delphi’s oracle site down to the shores of the Gulf of Corinth. But the trip earns its keep off the trail too—at a working honey farm in the Olympus foothills, over a glass of volcanic Meteoran wine poured by a sommelier at a family winery, and in quiet conversations with the clifftop monastic communities that have called Meteora home for centuries. Greece has no shortage of history. This trip puts you inside it.

Day 4: Mount Olympus hike
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Today is the main event—an ascent of Mount Olympus, legendary home of the ancient gods and Greece’s highest peak. Two routes tackle the mountain differently. Those on the shorter route descend first from the Prionia trailhead through dense forest before the path drops to its lowest point, then climbs back up through shifting terrain to the Stavros Shelter—a traditional mountain tavern where hot tea, coffee, and hearty Greek fare await. Along the way, the route passes the Old Monastery of Agios Dionysios, a centuries-old sanctuary of weathered stone walls nestled into the mountain’s embrace. Those taking the longer route climb the E4 trail without pause, ascending through ancient beech forests and towering black pines as the Enipeas Gorge reveals itself through the canopy below. The destination is the Spilios Agapitos Refuge at 6,900 feet—a well-earned lunch stop with the mythic summits of Mytikas, Stefani, and Skala looming overhead. The descent retraces the route back to Prionia. Dinner at the hotel rounds out this epic day.

- Option B: 7.1 miles, 3,366 ft elevation gain

- For those that wish to push themselves, climb the E4 trail as the Enipeas Gorge gradually reveals itself through the canopy below.
- Reach the Spilios Agapitos Refuge at 6,900 ft for lunch, with the summits of Mytikas, Stefani, and Skala looming overhead.
- Gather for a well-deserved dinner at the hotel to cap off an unforgettable day on Greece’s most mythic mountain.
Note: The Old Monastery of Agios Dionysios observes a strict dress code, so make sure to tuck a few extra layers into your day pack. Covered shoulders and knees are required for all visitors, and women will need to wear a skirt to enter.
Meteora2 nights
Day 5: Travel to Meteora and Adrachti Rock hike
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
A new region awaits as you board the bus and head southwest toward Kalambaka, the gateway to one of Greece's most surreal and breathtaking landscapes—Meteora. Upon arrival, you'll have free time to grab lunch and take in your first glimpses of the towering sandstone pillars that define this extraordinary place. From the edge of Kastraki village, a local guide leads the ascent to Adrachti Rock, winding upward through sparse Mediterranean scrub and ancient stone steps as the monolithic formations grow ever more dramatic around you. Monasteries that appear to grow straight from the rock itself come into view at eye level—Roussanou, Varlaam, and Great Meteoron suspended between earth and sky—before the full panorama of Meteora unfolds from the summit viewpoint. After the descent, you’ll head to your new hotel and have dinner with your group.

Day 6: Meteora Monasteries hike and optional Meteoran wine tasting & dinner
Included meal: Breakfast
Today brings a different kind of awe—trading mountain trails for one of the most spiritually and geologically remarkable landscapes on earth. A bus ride from the hotel brings you to Holy Trinity Monastery—perched on its isolated eastern pillar, reached by 140 steps carved directly into the living rock—where your local guide begins the hike. The route threads between medieval monasteries and sweeping viewpoints—Holy Trinity's gravity-defying exterior, the Main Observation Deck, Psaropetra Lookout—before arriving at Great Meteoron and Varlaam, two of the complex's most storied sites. A conversation with a local nun, monk, or priest (if available) offers rare and unhurried insight into Orthodox Christianity and life within these clifftop communities—after which all travelers continue down to the photogenic Roussanou Monastery, where shorter hikers board the bus back to the hotel while those on the longer route descend on foot through Kastraki. End the day with an optional Meteoran wine tasting and dinner—or relax and rest your legs at the hotel.

- Descend to Roussanou Monastery—one of Meteora's most photogenic active convents—before either boarding the bus back to the hotel or continuing on foot through Kastraki.
- Finish the evening with an optional Meteoran wine tasting and dinner.
Note: The Meteora Monasteries observe a strict dress code, so make sure to tuck a few extra layers into your day pack. Covered shoulders and knees are required for all visitors, and women will need to wear a skirt to enter.
Delphi region2 nights
Day 7: Travel to Delphi region, visit to the Delphi Archaeological Site, and walking tour of Arachova
Included meal: Breakfast
The drive south brings the group to the Delphi region, which loomed large in the ancient Greek world—but not before a stop at Thermopylae, where the legendary 480 BC battle between 300 Spartans and the Persian army unfolded. Visit the monument, museum, and iconic Leonidas Statue before continuing to Delphi, once considered the navel of the ancient world. A local guide leads a walking tour through the archaeological site, bringing temples, treasuries, and sacred pathways to life before you explore the museum and Temple of Apollo at your own pace. The day ends in Arachova, a mountain village perched at 3,200 feet on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, where your Tour Director walks you along the winding main street—past flokati rugs, hand-woven textiles, and traditional kafeneions (Greek coffee houses)—with a detour to the Church of Agios Georgios for sweeping views over the Pleistos Valley.
- Leave Meteora and stop at Thermopylae to visit the monument and small museum commemorating the legendary 300 Spartans and grab a photo with the Leonidas Statue.
- Explore the Delphi Archaeological Site and museum with a local guide, walking among temples, treasuries, and the iconic Temple of Apollo.
- Join your Tour Director for a walking tour of Arachova, stopping at the Church of Agios Georgios for panoramic views over the valley and past the village’s historic clock tower.
- Settle into your new hotel in the Delphi region.
Day 8: Ancient Delphi to Kirra hike
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Farewell dinner
The final hiking day is a fitting close to the week—a point-to-point descent from one of the ancient world’s most sacred sites to the shores of the Gulf of Corinth. Those taking the longer route set off from Delphi itself, following a section of the E4 trail down through terraced olive groves before joining the rest of the group in Chrisso. Here, in the village’s ancient olive grove—one of the oldest cultivated groves in Greece—you’ll taste locally pressed olive oil before continuing together. A short climb from the village leads to the ancient acropolis ruins and the whitewashed St. George Chapel, with sweeping views across the valley. Continue through ancient groves and coastal terrain to the waterfront in Kirra—once the bustling port where pilgrims arrived by sea before making the sacred ascent to Delphi’s oracle, and now a quiet stretch of shore where the gulf laps against the coast. Tonight, the group gathers one last time for a Farewell Dinner to celebrate an unforgettable week in Greece.

Santorini & Athens Coast extension
Santorini needs little introduction—but experiencing it up close, from a catamaran on the caldera to the mineral-rich hot springs of an active volcano, is something else entirely. These three days add world-class volcanic wines poured by a sommelier in the shadow of 3,500-year-old vineyards, a clifftop hike along the caldera rim from Imerovigli to Fira, open-water swimming off the caldera’s edge, and a sunset cruise back to shore with a Greek barbecue spread and unlimited Santorinian white wine. The final evening unwinds on the Athens Coast, a stretch of Mediterranean coastline that trades ancient ruins for some of the clearest water in the Aegean. If you’re going to come this far, why not stay a little longer?
Santorini2 nights
Day 9: Flight to Santorini, vineyard tour, and dinner with wine tasting
Included meals: Breakfast, Wine tasting, Dinner
A short flight from Athens delivers you to Santorini, one of the most iconic islands in the world. The island formed following a massive volcanic explosion more than 3,000 years ago, and the dramatic landscape it left behind has been captivating visitors ever since. After checking in to your new hotel, the evening brings one of the extension's highlights: a visit to a winery near Santorini's ancient vineyards—some of the oldest in the world, their roots reaching back 3,500 years into volcanic soil. A sommelier guides you through four pours of native volcanic wines, beginning with the island's signature Assyrtiko—crisp, mineral, and saline in a way that could only come from this black volcanic earth—before moving through other indigenous varietals rarely found beyond Greece's shores. Dinner follows, each course paired to what's in your glass, deepening the connection between Santorini's singular terroir and what appears on the plate.
- Transfer approximately 3 hours from the Delphi region to the Athens airport before boarding a short flight to Santorini, one of Greece’s most beautiful islands.
- Visit a local winery for a sommelier-led tasting of four native volcanic wines, including the island's signature Assyrtiko.

The trail threads past the dramatic promontory of Skaros Rock—crowned by the ruins of a Venetian fortress—along ancient cobblestone sections and volcanic footpaths fragrant with wild herbs, with sweeping caldera panoramas opening up at every turn. A morning coffee and pastry gets things started before the route descends into Fira, where free time for lunch awaits. The afternoon shifts to the water when you board a private catamaran for a cruise along the caldera, with swim and snorkel stops including the mineral-rich hot springs near Nea Kameni—where iron and sulfur turn the water a distinctive rust-orange near the shore. The cruise back to port brings a Greek barbecue spread and Santorinian white wine—and depending on the season, the Oia sunset along the way.

If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center.

- Those who want to raise their heart rate
What to expect:
- Daily mileage: 2–7 miles
- Daily elevation gain: Up to 3,400 ft
- Typical terrain: Rolling terrain with some significant gradients. Hikes are hilly with steeper climbs over longer distances.

- When you travel with EF Adventures, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
- Travel, when done responsibly, can have an enormous socioeconomic impact on communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at small businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
- Prepare for your trip: Be aware of monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market; learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette; and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
- When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
- EF Adventures encourages travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single-use plastics. You can cut back on generating plastic waste by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
- When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
- When you come across wild animals on tour, take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart: Don't touch or feed them, and maintain a respectful distance. The animals you encounter on your trip should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior.
- Furthermore, avoid buying exploitative animal products, like crafts made from animal parts or products tested on animals.
- If you feel we aren’t meeting any of these commitments, please let us know.
