Where staggering peaks meet gorgeous glacial lakes

Stretching nearly 1,000 miles from northern British Columbia to Alberta, the Canadian Rockies are home to breathtaking nature, more than a thousand glowing glaciers, and some of the region’s most bucket list-worthy hikes. Banff National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site with its dramatic peaks and glittering glacial lakes, is a dream for nature-lovers. From the summit of Sulphur Mountain, you’ll have picture-perfect views of the namesake Banff Town, before setting off on your drive along the famous Icefields Parkway, which holds the title as one of the world’s most scenic highways. Venture through wildflower-filled meadows hiking to one of the Rockies’ signature, jewel-toned glacier lakes, Helen Lake. Then settle into a regal chateau-turned-hotel on the banks of turquoise Lake Louise—one of Banff’s gems—before exploring along the shores on the Lake Agnes Teahouse trail, journeying to a perched log tea house rising above the glittering Lake Agnes. And no hiking trip to Banff National Park would be complete without summiting the Sentinel Pass—the highest point in Banff—for sweeping shots of the Valley of the Ten Peaks below. Itinerary

Banff

Day 1: Fly to Calgary & transfer to Banff

The Rocky Mountains are calling! You’ve counted down the days and the time is finally here. Grab your bag and passport and head to the airport for your flight just over the Canadian border to Calgary. Once you arrive, settle into the 2-hour transfer to Banff, where you can rest up at your hotel before your adventure begins tomorrow.

Note: Airport transfers are included for travelers who book flights with EF Adventures. If you book your own flights, airport transfers may be available for a fee upon request.

Day 2: Sulphur Mountain hike, Banff Town visit, and optional river float

Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Welcome to Canada’s first national park, Banff! Today you’ll get a full circle introduction to the beauty that Banff National Park has to offer, from summiting Sulphur Mountain, named after the hot springs blanketing the slopes, to wandering the streets of charming Banff, a compact alpine town encased by mountains on all sides whose downtown is filled with château-style hotels, art galleries and museums. Now that you’ve gotten a taste of the park’s trails, experience a different side of Banff and spend the afternoon floating on the Bow River on an optional excursion past waterfalls and impressive rock pillars.

Today's adventure

Sulphur Mountain hike

  • Physical intensity: 3 out of 5
  • Distance: 3.1 miles
  • Elevation change: 2,080 ft gain

Jump straight into your hiking adventure as you tackle a series of steady switchbacks and head uphill to the summit of Sulphur Mountain. Keep an eye out for wildlife like bighorn sheep and marmots as you make your way to the top, where sweeping views over craggy Cascade Mountain and the Sundance Range’s 15-mile-long line of peaks await. At the summit, grab a bite at the award-winning Sky Bistro, stroll the boardwalk to the Cosmic Ray Station to learn more about the national park, or make your way to Sanson’s Peak, the highest point of the mountain.

Today’s highlights
  • Get to know your fellow hikers and Tour Director during a Welcome Orientation.
  • Set off on your first hike of the trip up Sulphur Mountain, then descend down 2,000 feet inside a glass-encased gondola.
  • Share highlights from your first hike over a Welcome Lunch in town before free time exploring Banff’s charming shops and cafes.
  • Embark on an optional floating down the jade-colored Bow River or enjoy dinner on your own in Banff during a free evening.

Canmore extension

Your time in Canmore was far too short, so why not extend for two extra days to squeeze in a couple more incredible hikes? The former coal mining town, nestled in the heart of the Bow River Valley, made history hosting the Nordic events during the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympic Games. Dive deeper into the area’s history and the Indigenous Peoples—known as Châ Ûpchîchîyen Kudebi by the Stoney Nakoda—who have shaped the culture and tradition of Canmore over the past 10,000 years. Soak up another side of Canmore’s culture at the mountain town’s many galleries and art studios, where you’ll find pieces by some of Alberta’s most prized artists.

Canmore

Day 6: Ha Ling Peak hike & optional whitewater rafting

Included meal: Breakfast

Ha Ling earned its distinct name from a railway worker who speedily summited this mountain in under 10 hours back in 1896. While you won’t take on nearly as difficult of a feat today, you’ll still embark on an invigorating hike through dense forest trails that give way to spectacular mountain vistas overlooking Canmore from the summit. Explore the nearby low-key region of Kananaskis Country, which borders Canmore and Banff and is known for its mix of outdoor activities like golfing. Then, give your arms a workout on an optional whitewater rafting excursion down the Kananaskis River, or spend time discovering Canmore’s Main Street and its eclectic shops.

Today's adventure

Ha Ling Peak hike

  • Physical intensity: 4 out of 5
  • Distance: 4.5 miles
  • Elevation change: 2,614 ft gain

Following in the steps of Ha Ling, you’ll encounter steep switchbacks and pass through tree-encased trails that slowly reveal rocky terrain and sweeping shots of Canmore and the Bow Valley below. You’ll be challenged at the finale as you navigate the scramble to the top, but it’s worth it for the views over craggy peaks and winding rivers. After catching your breath, you’ll return back along the same trail before heading over to discover Kananaskis Country.

Today’s highlights
  • Conquer Canmore’s popular Ha Ling Peak hike that ends with a challenging scramble to the summit.
  • Discover more around Canmore during free time for lunch in Kananaskis Country.
  • Feel the rush on a thrilling optional whitewater rafting on the Kananaskis River.

Day 7: Optional Cascade Ponds Hike with Indigenous guide & Banff National Park distillery visit

Included meal: Breakfast

Dive deeper into local Indigenous culture on an optional excursion to Banff National Park with an Indigenous guide, who will point out medicinal plants and trees as you skirt the banks of the mountain-framed Cascade Ponds. Or you can spend the day exploring more of Canmore at your own pace, soaking at Nordic spa-inspired Everwild or enjoying your hotel’s amenities.

Today’s highlights
  • Combine two epic experiences into one on an optional day excursion—join an Indigenous guide on a Medicine Walk in Cascade Ponds, then sample local spirits during a distillery visit and lunch in downtown Banff.
  • Spend a free day on your own sampling hyper-local and seasonally driven restaurants in Canmore, or relax with a soak in the hot tub your hotel.

Flight home

Day 8: Fly home

Included meal: Breakfast
