Provence region3 nights
Day 2: Arrival in Marseille & transfer to Provence region
Included meal: Welcome dinner
Welcome to France! After landing in Marseille, you’ll make your way to your first hotel in the enchanting Provence region, known for its purple lavender fields, golden sunflower meadows, and silver-green olive groves. Tonight, you’ll get to know your fellow hikers over a traditional Provençal dinner featuring local specialties and regional wines.
- Meet an EF representative at the airport.
- Transfer to your hotel in the Provence region (about 1 hour) to check in and get acquainted with your new surroundings.
- Toast with a glass of beer or wine while getting to know your fellow hikers and Tour Director during a Welcome Orientation.

Note: Airport transfers are included for travelers who book flights with EF Adventures. If you book your own flights, airport transfers may be available for a fee upon request.
Day 3: Roussillon & the Ochre Trail hike & Gordes visit
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Your first day of hiking kicks off with two of the most stunning villages in the Luberon region, both officially recognized as Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (Most Beautiful Villages of France). You’ll start with the fiery ochre cliffs of Roussillon, where striking red rock formations were created by ancient oceans that deposited minerals over millennia. Local legend tells a different, much more scandalous tale—these vivid red tones come from the blood of Dame Sermonde, a beautiful noblewoman who leapt to her death after being confronted by her jealous husband about her affair with a troubadour. After exploring this unique terrain on foot, you’ll visit Gordes, where ancient stone buildings cling to the hillside above terraced lavender fields that bloom purple in summer, creating one of Provence’s most iconic and photographed landscapes.
Roussillon & the Ochre Trail hike
- Physical intensity: 1 out of 5
- Distance: 4 miles
- Elevation change: 400 ft gain
Beginning in the heart of Roussillon, you’ll follow the official Sentier des Ocres through former ochre mines that created this surreal landscape of earthy pigments ranging from golden yellow to deep crimson. The well-maintained trail winds through ochre canyons and pine forests, with wooden steps and viewing platforms providing safe access to the most dramatic viewpoints. After making your way out of the canyons, you’ll continue on a loop around the outskirts of Roussillon before returning to the village center.
- Hike 4 miles along the famous Ochre Trail (Sentier des Ocres) through dramatic canyons.
- Enjoy some lunch at a local restaurant in Roussillon to celebrate your first hike of the tour.
- Explore Gordes’ medieval streets and admire panoramic views across the Luberon valley and surrounding countryside.
Day 4: Saint-Rémy-de-Provence market, hike to Les Baux-de-Provence & optional Château Estoublon wine tasting + gourmet dinner
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
Immerse yourself in the authentic rhythms of Provençal life as you venture deeper into the Saint-Rémy-de-Provence region, an area known for its quaint, pastel-hued villages and landscape so beautiful it inspired van Gogh to create some of his most important works, including The Starry Night. You’ll begin in the namesake village of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where centuries-old, honey-colored buildings extend across sun-drenched terraces. After browsing the vibrant Wednesday market where locals have gathered for generations, you’ll hike through the distinctive limestone landscape of the Alpilles Regional Natural Park to reach Les Baux-de-Provence. This jaw-droppingly gorgeous village dates back to the 10th century, its 13th-century castle ruins still defining the skyline. Here, you’ll experience the innovative Carrières de Lumières, where masterpiece paintings are projected onto the walls of a former limestone quarry, creating an art experience that brings van Gogh’s vibrant works to life in spectacular fashion. Round out this perfect Provençal day with an optional Château Estoublon wine tasting and gourmet dinner, where you can savor the region’s celebrated flavors.
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence to Les Baux-de-Provence hike
- Physical intensity: 2 out of 5
- Distance: 5.6 miles
- Elevation change: 958 ft gain
Beginning in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, you’ll follow portions of the GR6 long-distance trail, one of France’s premier hiking routes that crosses through Provence, into the Alpilles mountain range. After ascending, you’ll be treated to spectacular views—to one side stretches the vast Crau Plain, once the delta of the Durance River, and to the other the fertile Durance Valley itself. The trail winds through fragrant garrigue vegetation—thyme, rosemary, and juniper—before descending toward the impressive village of Les Baux-de-Provence, which looks as if it’s growing directly out of the rocky outcrop it sits upon.
- Browse Saint-Rémy-de-Provence’s acclaimed Wednesday market, sampling local cheeses and perhaps picking up a snack for your hike.
- Hike nearly 6 miles from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence to Les Baux-de-Provence through the white limestone landscape of the Alpilles Regional Natural Park.
- Explore the medieval village of Les Baux-de-Provence during a walking tour with your Tour Director.
- Experience the work of van Gogh in a whole new light, at a former limestone quarry turned immersive art exhibition—Carrières de Lumières.
- Join the optional Château Estoublon wine tasting and gourmet dinner to sample Provence’s renowned vintages paired with regional specialties, or enjoy a free evening to relax at your hotel.
Côte d’Azur region3 nights
Day 5: Explore Aix-en-Provence and its markets and travel to Côte d’Azur region
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Dinner
Spend one final day in the greater Provence region exploring Aix-en-Provence, a sophisticated university town known for its elegant architecture, artistic heritage, and thermal springs dating back to Roman times. Unlike yesterday’s single weekly market in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Aix-en-Provence offers multiple bustling markets throughout the week—from the daily produce market on Place Richelme to the flower market on Place de l’Hôtel de Ville. While here, you’ll also follow in the footsteps of Paul Cézanne, who was born here and spent most of his life painting the surrounding landscape—particularly the nearby Montagne Sainte-Victoire, which appeared in over 60 of his works. Then, it’s off to the glittering Côte d’Azur (French Riviera), where Mediterranean breezes, coastal beauty, and more adventure await.
- Experience Aix-en-Provence’s diverse markets, sampling local specialties like honey, olive oil, and fresh produce across different squares throughout the historic center.
- Discover Aix-en-Provence’s artistic legacy on a guided tour past Cézanne’s birthplace, his father’s hat shop, and sites featured in his paintings.
- Explore the impressive collection at the Musée Granet featuring works by Cézanne and Picasso.
- Taste traditional calisson—a sweet treat made from candied fruit and ground almonds that’s been a local specialty since the 15th century.
- Arrive at your new hotel in the stunning Côte d’Azur region, where palm trees and Mediterranean views signal your transition to the glamorous French Riviera, and enjoy dinner to announce your coastal arrival.
Day 6: Cap Canaille cliffs hike & Calanques National Park boat cruise
Included meal: Breakfast
It’s your first full day in the dazzling Côte d’Azur, a region of France known for its blue waters, dramatic cliffs, and picturesque fishing villages. Today you’ll discover Calanques National Park, France’s newest national park (established in 2012) that spans both land and sea. You’ll start by conquering Cap Canaille, home to the highest maritime cliffs in Europe, where your route along the Crest Trail provides panoramic views of the rugged coastline stretching from the colorful port of Cassis to the distant islands of Marseille. In the afternoon, you’ll gain a different perspective during a boat cruise along the national park’s iconic calanques—narrow fjord-like inlets carved from brilliant white limestone and filled with crystal-clear turquoise waters, sculpted over millions of years by the patient forces of wind, rain, and sea.

You’ll pass through aromatic pine forests and scrubland to reach Rocher de Grande Tête, the highest point of your hike at 1,312 feet. The trail continues along dramatic cliffside terrain, passing the mysterious Caves of the Emigrants—ancient limestone caverns where travelers once sought shelter—before reaching the famous Cap Canaille, where the sweeping panorama extends to the islands of Marseille and beyond to Cap Sicié. The final stretch of the hike descends gradually into Cassis, a lovely fishing port where you’ll have free time for lunch.

- Discover geological wonders like the Caves of the Emigrants and impressive rock formations along Cap Canaille.

Day 7: Sentier du Littoral hike & Farewell Dinner
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
Ready for the quintessential French Riviera experience? Today you’ll hike along one of the most spectacular coastal trails in Europe, following the famous Sentier du Littoral (Coastal Path). As you’ll discover, this stretch of coastline offers dramatic variety—hidden calanques, rugged cliffs, and secluded coves accessible only by foot—where you’ll experience the raw beauty of the Mediterranean coast while cooling off in the blue waters. In the evening, after a week of adventuring on foot, you’ll gather with your fellow hikers for a Farewell Dinner, reminiscing about favorite moments and celebrating your newfound friendships.

Transfer to Marseille airport (about 1 hour) for your international flight home, perhaps already planning your return to explore more of this beautiful region—maybe by bike?
Nice extension
You’ve hiked through some of the most remarkable stretches of Provence and the Côte d’Azur, but there’s still one part of the French Riviera that can’t be missed: Nice! Extend your journey with a 2-night stay in the crown jewel of the French Riviera. Museums and galleries are dedicated to the artistic greats who once lived here, like Matisse and Chagall, and the city’s cornucopia of classic architecture blends everything from Baroque to Belle Époque. You’ll savor the relaxed Riviera pace as you stroll the crescent-shaped Promenade des Anglais with a rosé in hand, watching the sun dip behind the pebble-strewn beaches and mountains in the distance.

But one of the best ways to get your bearings in Nice is through the cuisine, sampling regional specialties like zucchini flower fritters and pissaladière, a caramelized onion and anchovy tart. Yachts anchor around the rugged shoreline, which is lined with nearly 3.5 miles of trail along steep cliffs and natural stairs. Bring your bathing suit for today’s hike around the cape, ending at a lighthouse to the south, and marking the entrance to the Villefranche harbor. Know before you go
- In order to enter France, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
- We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
- Beginning in late 2026, Passport holders from visa-exempt countries like the U.S. and Canada will need to register for an ETIAS travel authorization to enter certain European countries. Even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these 30 countries without a visa, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you’ll only need to complete the form once.
- All EF Adventures travelers will be responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center.
- If you aren’t a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
Round-trip flights booked through EF arrive in Marseille and depart from Marseille, or Nice if you book the trip extension.
Transfers to and from the airport at the beginning and end of the tour are included for travelers who purchased their flights through EF Adventures. Travelers who booked their own flights are responsible for securing their own transfer upon arrival, and may request a departure transfer with EF Adventures for an additional cost.
When you arrive in Marseille, an EF representative will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with an EF sign or a sign with your name(s). If you don’t see a representative immediately, please be patient and stay in the arrivals area. They may be assisting another traveler who has also just arrived and will be back shortly.
Physical activity level
This tour is rated as Moderate, which means you're ready to tackle some hills and elevate your heart rate, but not at the expense of enjoying the surroundings. This level balances active hiking with moments of leisure. You'll encounter moderate elevation gains and longer trails, with breaks to catch your breath and soak in the scenery.
This tour is great for:
- Recreational hikers
- Those who enjoy a good workout in nature
What to expect:
- Daily mileage: 3–8 miles
- Daily elevation gain: Up to 1,800 ft
- Typical terrain: Relatively flat with more established gradients and the occasional steeper climb
Tour pacing
This is a steady-paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:
- Two 3-night stays
- Most days and evenings full of included activities (more if you add excursions)
- Most transportation by bus/van
Climate considerations
- Provence and the French Riviera both have Mediterranean climates with hot, dry summers and mild winters.
- Summer (June to August) temperatures often reach 85°F to 90°F during the day, with coastal areas of the Riviera sometimes slightly moderated by sea breezes.
- Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are milder, with temperatures ranging from 60°F to 75°F throughout both regions.
- Provence experiences the Mistral, a strong, cold wind that can occur year-round but is most common in winter and spring. The French Riviera is more sheltered from this wind due to its coastal geography.
- Mornings and evenings can be cooler, especially in Provence's hilly areas and higher elevations. Coastal Riviera locations tend to have more stable temperatures due to maritime influence.
- Rain is less common during summer months, but it's always a good idea to pack a lightweight, packable rain jacket.
Physical activity & tour pace questions
- EF Adventures and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
- This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The rest of the group cannot miss any scheduled activities because of the needs of an individual.
- If you have physical activity concerns or tour pace questions, please visit our Help Center or give us call at 617-619-1679. We’re here to help!
This tour includes various modes of transportation, but mostly private buses/vans and boats.

- Travelers must be able to manage their luggage throughout tour; porters aren’t guaranteed at hotels or airports.
