- Meet an EF representative at the airport.
- Transfer 1–1.5 hours to your hotel in the Val d’Orcia region.
- Toast with a glass of wine, beer, or a soft drink while you get to know your fellow hikers and Tour Director during a Welcome Orientation.

Note: Airport transfers are included for travelers who book flights with EF Adventures. If you book your own flights, airport transfers may be available for a fee upon request.
Day 3: Pienza hike, Pienza walking tour, and optional Tuscan cooking class & dinner
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
Your first full hiking day begins in San Quirico d’Orcia—a sleepy medieval town of stone towers and Romanesque churches—before the trail opens onto one of Tuscany’s most celebrated walks. Long-route hikers set out on foot through gently rolling hills, passing fields of wheat and barley and the very hillside made famous in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator. Shorter-route hikers hop a quick bus to join the group midway. Both routes converge at the Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta—a small Renaissance chapel standing alone on a hilltop at 1,378 feet, framed by sentinel cypresses. From there, the path winds past stone farmhouses and through olive groves into Pienza, a Renaissance gem whose cathedral and piazza were commissioned by Pope Pius II in the 15th century. After free time for lunch, your Tour Director leads a short walking tour through town, ending with a Pecorino cheese tasting. In the evening, consider joining the optional Tuscan cooking class and dinner.
Pienza hike
- Option A: 3 miles, 653 ft elevation gain
- Physical intensity: 1 out of 5
- Option B: 5.2 miles, 968 ft elevation gain

- Join the optional Tuscan cooking class and dinner or enjoy a free evening to do as you please.
Day 4: Monticchiello to Montepulciano hike, lunch & wine tasting, and walking tour of Montepulciano
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Wine tasting
Today’s hike sets out from Monticchiello—a honey-colored medieval village so small and perfectly preserved it feels untouched by time—on a point-to-point journey toward Montepulciano, one of Tuscany’s most celebrated wine towns. The trail follows gravel farm roads and footpaths through vineyards, wheat fields, and cypress-studded ridges before winding through Vino Nobile country. Both route options pass the Tempio di San Biagio—a Renaissance church rising from the valley floor in perfect symmetry. Shorter-route hikers finish here and take a quick bus up to Montepulciano; those continuing on foot press through olive groves and past wine cellars carved into the hillside before reaching the town’s Renaissance walls at roughly 1,982 feet. Once in Montepulciano, a winery cellar tour and lunch with wine pairings awaits, followed by a Tour Director-led walk to the Piazza Grande—where views back across the Val d’Orcia make for a fitting close to the day.
Monticchiello to Montepulciano hike
- Option A: 3.5 miles, 623 ft elevation gain

San Gimignano region2 nights
Day 5: Siena walking tour and travel to San Gimignano region
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Dinner
Say goodbye to the Val d’Orcia region as your tour continues to the San Gimignano region. You’ll stop in Siena for a walking tour, where you’ll cross off landmarks like the striking Siena Cathedral, the Piccolomini Library inside (which is absolutely covered in impressive frescoes), and Piazza del Campo before ending at a local bakery for a tasting of traditional ricciarelli—Siena’s signature almond cookies, the region’s version of a macaroon. The day ends on an equally decadent note as you arrive at your charming countryside hotel.
- Set off from the Val d’Orcia region to Siena for a walking tour of the city’s highlights.
- Sample the region’s signature ricciarelli almond cookie at a local bakery in Siena.
- Cheers to the day’s adventure over dinner at your new hotel in the San Gimignano countryside.
Day 6: Monteriggioni hike and dinner with wine tasting in San Gimignano
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner, Wine tasting
The day’s destination is Monteriggioni—a perfectly circular medieval fortress town whose fourteen towers and intact circular walls have remained virtually unchanged since the 13th century, and which Dante immortalized in the Inferno. Long-route hikers set out on foot from the peaceful countryside near your hotel, following quiet country roads and farm tracks before passing the Abbadia a Isola—a Romanesque abbey that once served as a vital stop on the Via Francigena pilgrimage route. This is where shorter-route hikers join the group, having taken a quick bus to Abbadia a Isola to begin their hike. From the abbey, the path continues until Monteriggioni’s famous silhouette emerges on the horizon. Once inside the fortified gateway, you’ll have free time to walk the remarkably intact ramparts, explore the charming stone piazza, and take in sweeping views across the Tuscan countryside. In the evening, you’ll head to a winery in the San Gimignano countryside for a cellar tour and dinner with wine pairings.

- Physical intensity: 1 out of 5
- Option B: 5.3 miles, 564 ft elevation gain

- Step inside Monteriggioni’s fortified gateway and explore the medieval town at your own pace.
- Head to a winery in the San Gimignano countryside for a cellar tour and dinner with wine pairings.
Italian Riviera3 nights
Day 7: Portovenere walking tour and travel to the Italian Riviera
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Ciao, Tuscany! Today marks your grand entrance into the Italian Riviera—the crescent-shaped stretch of Mediterranean coastline sandwiched between the South of France and Tuscany, where seaside towns cling to dramatic cliffs above sparkling turquoise lagoons. After a scenic drive from the San Gimignano region, you’ll arrive in Portovenere, a UNESCO World Heritage village that Byron, Shelley, and Keats once called home—earning this stretch of coastline the name “Gulf of Poets.” Your Tour Director will lead you on a walking tour through the medieval Porta del Borgo and along Via Capellini before emerging at the Church of San Pietro, a Gothic-Romanesque landmark that sits on the cliffs above the sea. After the tour, it’s on to your hotel on the Italian Riviera for your first night of Riviera living.
- Depart the San Gimignano region—and Tuscany as a whole—and make your grand entrance into the Italian Riviera.
- Explore Portovenere on a walking tour with your Tour Director, taking in the colorful harborfront palazzate, the Church of San Pietro, Byron’s Grotto, and the Doria Castle.
- Set off from Portovenere to your hotel in the Italian Riviera, where you’ll settle into your first night of Riviera living with a group dinner at the hotel.
Day 8: Hiking and free time in Cinque Terre
Included meal: Breakfast
This is it—the pinnacle of coastal Italian hikes, Cinque Terre. The inspiration for Disney’s Luca, these five, crayon-colored cliffside villages are linked by nearly 75 miles of footpaths—some of which lead down to that oh-so-refreshing sea. Those opting for more miles today will board the train to Corniglia, the highest and most remote of the five villages, where the trail climbs immediately through terraced vineyards before ascending to the hilltop hamlet of Volastra at roughly 1,220 feet—home to the 10th-century Santuario della Madonna della Salute. The path then descends through olive groves into Manarola, where those on the shorter route join the group. Both routes continue along the dramatic coastal trail to Riomaggiore, where your Tour Director leads a walking tour of the town's narrow streets and harbor. From there, board a ferry from Manarola to Monterosso al Mare—the best possible way to take in all five villages at once, with the cliffs and colorful facades unfolding from the water. The afternoon is yours to explore at your own pace.
Cinque Terre hike
- Option A: 1.2 miles, 741 ft elevation gain
- Physical intensity: 2 out of 5
- Option B: 4.2 miles, 1,647 ft elevation gain
- Physical intensity: 3 out of 5
Note: Coastal trails throughout Cinque Terre are often closed due to shifting weather patterns, so your specific route may vary.
- Hike in Cinque Terre—with the option to start in Corniglia and climb to Volastra, or join the group in Manarola for the coastal stretch to Riomaggiore.
- Enjoy a Tour Director-led walking tour of Riomaggiore, exploring its narrow streets and vibrant harbor.
- Take an unbelievably scenic ferry ride from Manarola to Monterosso, taking in views of Cinque Terre from the Mediterranean.
- Spend the afternoon exploring the other stunning towns (aperitivo, anyone?) for as long as you’d like before heading back to your hotel.
Day 9: Portofino to San Fruttuoso Abbey hike
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Farewell dinner
Your last hike of the trip begins with a short train from Chiavari to Rapallo, then a ferry along the Ligurian coast to Portofino, a tiny harbor village of pastel-painted houses and superyachts that has drawn artists and jet-setters since the 1950s. From the colorful waterfront, your hike climbs steadily through fragrant Mediterranean forest before cresting at roughly 920 feet and descending toward San Fruttuoso—where the Abbey of San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte, a 10th-century Benedictine monastery tucked into a secluded cove accessible only by foot or boat, comes into view. Explore the abbey’s historic cloisters, take a dip in the crystalline water, and enjoy a focaccia tasting on the beach. Those on the shorter hike finish here and take a ferry back to Portofino; those continuing follow coastal trails back with sweeping views across the Portofino Marine Reserve before arriving in Portofino on foot—with time to take in the harbor’s pastel-hued homes before heading back to the hotel for your Farewell Dinner.
Portofino to San Fruttuoso Abbey hike
- Option A: 2.8 miles, 1,004 ft elevation gain
- Physical intensity: 2 out of 5
- Option B: 6 miles, 2,192 ft elevation gain
- Physical intensity: 3 out of 5
- Take a ferry from Rapallo to Portofino, then set out on a trail through Mediterranean forest toward the Abbey of San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte.
- Explore the abbey’s historic cloisters and take a dip in the crystalline cove—one of the Italian Riviera’s most secluded spots.
- Hike back to Portofino along coastal trails with views across the Portofino Marine Reserve—or take the ferry from the Abbey if you’re done hiking for the day.
- Enjoy one last meal as a group at your Farewell Dinner along the Italian Riviera.
Flight home
Day 10: Fly home
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
You’ve checked off some of Tuscany’s most charming towns, sipped the wine, sampled the food, and conquered the coast hiking in Cinque Terre. You knew this day would come (trips always fly by when you’re having a lot of fun), and you’re probably ready to rest those legs for a few days. Good thing you have time to sit back and relax on the flight back. It’s time to pack your bags and transfer 45 minutes to an hour to the Genoa airport to catch your international flight home.
Florence extension
Sure, hiking through rural Tuscany and coastal Cinque Terre along the Italian Riviera is spectacular on its own. But if you’re looking for a few extra days in Italy, start your adventure early in Florence, a city that offers some of the world’s most impressive Renaissance art and architecture like the Duomo. While the city can seem like a living museum, there’s plenty to do when you’re ready for an art break. From browsing the Mercato Centrale food hall to sampling the city’s best gelato and traditional Florentine desserts like zuccotto (a semi-frozen, dome-shaped cake), it’s not hard to fall head over heels for Florence. A few days here is also a great excuse to get adjusted to the new time zone and rest up before your jam-packed hiking tour kicks off!

Day 1: Fly to Florence
Head off on your overnight flight to Florence and ease into Italian life in one of Europe’s most charming cities.
Florence2 nights
Day 2: Arrival in Florence
Welcome to Firenze, the capital of Italy’s Tuscan region, where masters like Leonardo da Vinci lived and worked. Art and architecture buffs won’t know where to start—landmarks, museums, and artwork here are practically endless (it is the birthplace of the Renaissance, after all). Don’t feel like you need to check everything off at once. A stroll along the city’s symbolic Ponte Vecchio, a medieval stone bridge lined with shops, is enough to shake off jet lag and build up excitement for the days ahead.
- Meet an EF representative at the Florence airport.
- Transfer to your hotel in Florence (a 30- to 60-minute drive).
- Toast to the start of your trip with a Welcome Drink before setting out and stretching your legs on a stroll around the city.
Day 3: Walking tour of Florence & optional Pitti Palace & Boboli Gardens excursion
Included meal: Breakfast
On your first full day in Italy, cross many of Florence’s highlights off your list on a guided walking tour. Snap photos of the Florence Cathedral, known locally as the Duomo, and the freestanding Giotto’s Campanile, a bell tower with nearly 400 steps to the top, before continuing to Casa di Dante, a museum dedicated to the life and work of the Italian literary legend. Another highlight: the Baptistery of San Giovanni, with its gilded bronze doors famously dubbed the “Gates of Paradise” by Michelangelo. Within walking distance from your hotel, you can also join an optional excursion to the Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens, where you’ll stroll through the Grand Dukes’ former living quarters and the Medici’s private collection of art before soaking up sweeping views of Florence from the hilltop gardens.
- Soak up Florence’s history on a walking tour with a local expert.
- Marvel at the city’s iconic architecture as you stroll along the Arno River through the Uffizi Gallery courtyard to Florence’s main square, Piazza della Signoria.
- Opt for the excursion to the Pitti Palace & Boboli Gardens, or spend the afternoon continuing to explore on your own before finding some dinner at one of Florence’s fantastic restaurants.
Day 4: Travel from Florence to the Val d'Orcia region
Included meals: Breakfast, Welcome dinner
After a morning cappuccino, it’s time to pack your suitcase and hop on the 2-hour bus ride to Val d’Orcia region to meet your hiking companions and kickstart your tour.
Note: While today is officially Day 4 of your trip, when you meet up with the rest of your Italy Hiking: Tuscany & Cinque Terre group, they will be on Day 2. For consistency, once you join the group, you will also be on Day 2.

- In order to enter Italy, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
- We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
- U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
- Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2026, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All EF Adventures travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center.
- If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact your destination country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
- Round-trip flights booked through EF Adventures arrive in Florence and depart from Genoa.
- Transfers to and from the airport at the beginning and end of the tour are included for travelers who purchased their flights through EF Adventures. If you book your own flights, airport transfers may be available for a fee upon request.
- When you arrive in Florence, an EF Adventures representative will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with an EF Adventures sign or a sign with your name(s). If you don’t see a representative immediately, please be patient and stay in the arrivals area. They may be assisting another traveler who has also just arrived and will be back shortly.

- As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
- Italy is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and 6 hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
- When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm in Italy.
- When you travel with EF Adventures, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
- Travel, when done responsibly, can have an enormous socioeconomic impact on communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at small businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
- Prepare for your trip: Be aware of monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market; learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette; and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
- When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
- EF Adventures encourages travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single-use plastics. You can cut back on generating plastic waste by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
- When you come across wild animals on tour, take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart: Don't touch or feed them, and maintain a respectful distance. The animals you encounter on your trip should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior.
- Furthermore, avoid buying exploitative animal products, like crafts made from animal parts or products tested on animals.
- If you feel we aren’t meeting any of these commitments, please let us know.
