Included meal: Welcome dinner
Benvenuto in Italia! Don’t worry if your Italian is rusty—you can brush up on the basics while taking in the scenery on the stunning drive from the Florence airport. You’ll be whisked off to the Val d’Orcia region in southern Tuscany, known for its rolling vineyards, postcard-perfect villages, medieval castles, and trails so gorgeous they’ve appeared as backdrops in films like Gladiator.
- Meet an EF representative at the airport.
- Transfer 2 hours to your hotel in the Val d’Orcia region.
- Toast with a glass of wine, beer, or a soft drink while you get to know your fellow hikers and Tour Director during a Welcome Orientation.

Day 3: San Quirico d'Orcia to Pienza hike, Pienza walking tour & optional Tuscan cooking class and dinner
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
Your trip begins with a mostly flat hike along panoramic Campi Elisi—considered one of the most gorgeous trails in Italy—through sweeping open meadows to Pienza. This Tuscan town may not get the same kind of international attention as, say, Pisa, but Pienza deserves it—and is well worth the morning hike. Your Tour Director will fill you in on the history of Pienza’s spectacular Renaissance architecture on a short stroll around town before you sample some of the capital’s famous pecorino cheese. In the evening, keep the good flavors coming at an optional cooking class and dinner.
San Quirico d'Orcia to Pienza hike
- Physical intensity: 2 out of 5
- Distance: 5.7 miles
- Elevation change: 1,040 ft gain
Starting from the charming town of San Quirico d'Orcia, you’ll set off on a hike along one of Italy’s most beautiful trails, Campi Elisi. You’ll hike through picturesque open fields on a path that’s mostly flat—meaning you won’t be too out of breath by time you reach the money shot where Gladiator was filmed. You’ll want to have your camera ready to snap photos of the lush, endless rolling hills and the Romanesque-style Pieve di Corsignano, the 12th-century church that made a cameo in the blockbuster hit. After a quick visit inside, you’ll keep going until your final destination—Pienza!
- Marvel at the pastoral fields and rolling hills on your first hike of the trip, a 5.7-mile stunner along the Campi Elisi trail.
- Take a spin around Renaissance charmer Pienza with your Tour Director pointing out highlights along the way.
- Indulge in the region’s standout pecorino cheese (it’s so popular, there’s even a festival each September to celebrate) during your first food tasting.
- Join the optional Tuscan cooking class and dinner or enjoy a free evening to do as you please.
Day 4: Monticchiello to Montepulciano hike, lunch & wine tasting, and walking tour of Montepulciano
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Wine tasting
Today’s scenic hike through hilly Tuscan terrain takes you from charming Monticchiello to Montepulciano, a tiny, thousand-year-old walled town anchored by towers on either side. You can’t come to wine country without tasting Montepulciano, the second-most planted red grape variety in Italy and one of the country’s highest-value wines. After lunch and wine in the namesake town, you’ll walk to the star of Montepulciano—the 16th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta that crowns the highest point in town (and has been declared one of Italy’s most beautiful squares).
Monticchiello to Montepulciano hike
- Physical intensity: 2 out of 5
- Distance: 5.5 miles

Before you reach Montepulciano, you’ll pass by Bivio di San Biagio and its landmark Tempio di San Biagio, a Renaissance masterpiece.

San Gimignano region2 nights
Day 5: Siena walking tour & Monteriggioni visit
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Say goodbye to the Val d’Orcia region as your tour continues to the San Gimignano region. On a walking tour, you’ll cross off landmarks like the striking Siena Cathedral, the Piccolomini Library inside (which is absolutely covered in impressive frescoes), and Piazza del Campo before making your way to walled Monteriggioni, one of the oldest and most iconic villages in Italy (which is even given a shout-out in Dante’s Divine Comedy). Soak up local life during a tasting of traditional ricciarelli, almond biscuits that are the region’s version of a macaroon. The day ends on an even more decadent note as you arrive at your charming countryside hotel.
- Set off from the Val d’Orcia region to Siena for a walking tour of the city’s highlights.
- Sample the region’s signature ricciarelli almond cookie at a local bakery in the gated city of Monteriggioni, then snap some photos of the surrounding Chianti region from the city’s castle walls.
- Cheers to the day’s adventure over dinner at your new hotel in the San Gimignano countryside.
Day 6: Greve in Chianti loop hike with vineyard lunch and wine tasting
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Wine tasting
Look left, look right—views of vineyards for miles! Chianti’s rolling hills have long been linked with some of Italy’s top red wine. While walking the 6.3-mile loop hike in Chianti—which starts and ends in Greve—you’ll keep getting distracted by these jaw-droppingly beautiful vistas. You’ll get more than just views though, when you have the chance to sip wine right from the source during a tasting and pairing at one of the region’s many prized vineyards. Then it’s off to San Gimignano—the walled hilltop town famous for its impressive “skyline” of medieval towers—for a free evening exploring and dining on your own.

Greve in Chianti is what Tuscan wine dreams are made of, and you’ll have prime vineyard views from some of the most scenic panorama points on today’s hike. Don’t worry though—it won’t be too technical. In fact, you’ll start with a relaxing stroll through the Greve in Chianti town square before hiking past several world-famous vineyards en route to the charming hilltop village of Montefioralle.
- Soak up vineyard views on the scenic, 6.3-mile hike through the countryside surrounding Greve.
- Get acquainted with Chianti’s legendary red vino during a wine pairing with lunch.
- Spend the evening in San Gimignano, exploring and finding the perfect spot to feast on authentic Tuscan cuisine.
Italian Riviera3 nights
Day 7: Monte Muzzerone to Portovenere hike & travel to the Italian Riviera
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Ciao, Tuscany! Next stop, the tiny seaside village of Portovenere, your introduction to Cinque Terre (while it’s not technically part of the string of five towns, it’s often considered an extension). It’s a busy travel day, but your hike up Monte Muzzerone and then down to Portovenere is a great way to stretch your legs on the drive to the Italian Riviera—the croissant-shaped stretch of Mediterranean coastline sandwiched between the South of France and Tuscany. Picture pastel-colored seaside towns and dramatic cliffs dipping down to sparkling turquoise lagoons.

At Rifugio Muzzerone, you'll be rewarded with sweeping vistas over the Cinque Terre coastline and the dramatic promontory of Muzzerone itself. Then continue on the magical descent into Portovenere, the pastel-colored houses of this UNESCO World Heritage village coming into view, nestled between the sea and the mountains.
- Depart the San Gimignano region—and Tuscany as a whole—and make your grand entrance into the Italian Riviera.
- Tackle a gorgeous hike up to the top of Monte Muzzerone before descending into Portovenere, your gateway to the Italian Riviera.
- Set off from Portovenere to your hotel in the Italian Riviera, where you’ll settle into your first night of Riviera living with a group dinner at the hotel.
Day 8: Hiking and free time in Cinque Terre
Included meal: Breakfast
This is it—the pinnacle of coastal Italian hikes, Cinque Terre. The inspiration for Disney’s Luca, these five, crayon-colored cliffside villages are linked by nearly 75 miles of footpaths—some of which lead down to that oh-so-refreshing sea. The centuries-old towns are postcard perfect—think colorful boats bobbing in small harbors, charming cafés and pizzerias, and hillsides lined with vines, olive groves, and lemon trees. Today, you’ll be rewarded for the steep steps and climbs with stops at picturesque viewpoints in Volastra and storybook towns like cliffside Manarola and Riomaggiore. After your guided activities, you'll have the freedom to explore at your own pace for as long as you’d like.
Corniglia to Riomaggiore via Volastra & Manarola hike
- Physical intensity: 2 out of 5
- Distance: 4.2 miles
- Elevation change: 1,646 ft gain
Today is dedicated to Cinque Terre, and you’ll have the chance to discover some of the five seaside towns during this hike. You’ll kick things off in Corniglia, the smallest of the Cinque Terre villages. Hike up to Volastra, where you'll find the Gothic, arched Church of Madonna della Salute and be treated to panoramic views of the Mediterranean. From here, descend to Manarola, the second-smallest town of Cinque Terre, which clings dramatically to a cliff above the sea. Pause here to catch your breath before continuing on to Riomaggiore, winding through terraced vineyards along the way.
Note: Coastal trails throughout Cinque Terre are often closed due to shifting weather patterns, so your specific route may vary.
- Embark on a bucket list-worthy hike in Cinque Terre, starting in the cliffside village of Corniglia and ending in picturesque Riomaggiore.
- Enjoy a Tour Director-led walking tour of Riomaggiore, exploring its narrow streets and vibrant harbor.
- Take an unbelievably scenic ferry ride from Manarola to Monterosso, taking in views of Cinque Terre from the Mediterranean.
- Spend the afternoon exploring the other stunning towns (aperitivo, anyone?) for as long as you’d like before heading back to your hotel.
Day 9: San Rocco di Camogli to Portofino via San Fruttuoso Abbey hike
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Farewell dinner
Your last hike of the trip is certainly a worthy finale. One of the major highlights: the shimmering waters of San Fruttuoso’s bay, where you’ll spend time swimming and enjoying a tasting of cheese focaccia (the area’s specialty) beneath the landmark abbey. The day is jam-packed with photo-worthy views of the Gulf of Tigullo, a picturesque stretch of the Ligurian coast. As you make your way to Portofino, you’ll have the chance to admire the fishing village’s pastel-hued homes and glitzy boutiques. Then, you’ll take in views of Portofino and the superyachts clustered in the crescent-shaped harbor as you take a ferry back to the Italian Riviera for your Farewell Dinner.
San Rocco di Camogli to Portofino via San Fruttuoso Abbey hike
- Physical intensity: 3 out of 5
- Distance: 7.7 miles
- Elevation change: 2,188 ft gain
Set off on today’s hike to Portofino from the tiny village of San Rocco di Camogli, which sits high on a hill overlooking the Ligurian Sea, the northernmost arm of the Mediterranean. The first part of your hike takes you inland through lush forests to the San Fruttuoso Abbey, a seaside architectural marvel dating back to the 8th century. Here, you’ll have free time to swim and enjoy lunch and a tasting of cheese focaccia (the area’s specialty!), and can opt to take a ferry to Portofino if you are finished with hiking for the day. For those that wish to continue, your hike then continues with a climb to the ridge top, followed by a gradual descent to Portofino. As you near the coast, pine- and scrub-lined paths give way to stunning sea vistas—a dramatic finale to your hike.
Want to take things a little easier today? You can end your hike at San Fruttuoso Abbey and take a ferry from there to Portofino. Here’s what that hike would look like:
- Physical intensity: 2 out of 5
- Distance: 2.8 miles
- Elevation change: 817 ft gain
- Tackle the first half of the hike from San Rocco di Camogli, then savor some gooey cheese focaccia and take a well-deserved dip in San Fruttuoso’s turquoise-colored bay.
- Take a ferry to Portofino, or continue your hike along terraces and olive groves as you make your way past charming homes in Prato and the 16th-century Chapel of San Sebastiano, ending in Portofino.
- Live out your best dolce vita in Portofino, a popular spot for celebrities and A-listers.
- Hop on ferry from Portofino to Rapallo, and enjoy one last meal as a group at your Farewell Dinner along the Italian Riviera.
Flight home
Day 10: Fly home
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
You’ve checked off some of Tuscany’s most charming towns, sipped the wine, sampled the food, and conquered the coast hiking in Cinque Terre. You knew this day would come (trips always fly by when you’re having a lot of fun), and you’re probably ready to rest those legs for a few days. Good thing you have time to sit back and relax on the flight back. It’s time to pack your bags and transfer 45 minutes to an hour to the Genoa airport to catch your international flight home.
Florence extension
Sure, hiking through rural Tuscany and coastal Cinque Terre along the Italian Riviera is spectacular on its own. But if you’re looking for a few extra days in Italy, start your adventure early in Florence, a city that offers some of the world’s most impressive Renaissance art and architecture like the Duomo. While the city can seem like a living museum, there’s plenty to do when you’re ready for an art break. From browsing the Mercato Centrale food hall to sampling the city’s best gelato and traditional Florentine desserts like zuccotto (a semi-frozen, dome-shaped cake), it’s not hard to fall head over heels for Florence. A few days here is also a great excuse to get adjusted to the new time zone and rest up before your jam-packed hiking tour kicks off!

Art and architecture buffs won’t know where to start—landmarks, museums, and artwork here are practically endless (it is the birthplace of the Renaissance, after all). Snap photos of the Florence Cathedral, known locally as the Duomo, and the freestanding Giotto’s Campanile, a bell tower with nearly 400 steps to the top, before continuing to Casa di Dante, a museum dedicated to the life and work of the Italian literary legend. Another highlight: the Baptistery of San Giovanni, with its gilded bronze doors famously dubbed the “Gates of Paradise” by Michelangelo. Within walking distance from your hotel, you can also join an optional excursion to the Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens, where you’ll stroll through the Grand Dukes’ former living quarters and the Medici’s private collection of art before soaking up sweeping views of Florence from the hilltop gardens.
- Soak up Florence’s history on a walking tour with a local expert.
- Marvel at the city’s iconic architecture as you stroll along the Arno River through the Uffizi Gallery courtyard to Florence’s main square, Piazza della Signoria.

Day 4: Travel from Florence to the Val d'Orcia region
Included meals: Breakfast, Welcome dinner
After a morning cappuccino, it’s time to pack your suitcase and hop on the 2-hour bus ride to Val d’Orcia region to meet your hiking companions and kickstart your tour.

That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2026, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All EF Adventures travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center.
- If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact your destination country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
- Round-trip flights booked through EF Adventures arrive in Florence and depart from Genoa.
- Transfers to and from the airport at the beginning and end of the tour are included for travelers who purchased their flights through EF Adventures. Travelers who booked their own flights are responsible for securing their own transfer upon arrival, and may request a departure transfer with EF Adventures for an additional cost.
- When you arrive in Florence, an EF Adventures representative will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with an EF Adventures sign or a sign with your name(s). If you don’t see a representative immediately, please be patient and stay in the arrivals area. They may be assisting another traveler who has also just arrived and will be back shortly.

- To help you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend downloading the EF Adventures mobile app. It’s free and provides information about important deadlines and entry requirements, as well as your detailed itinerary, packing tips, and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the app’s chat feature.

Your Tour Director will be an experienced hiker who will accompany you throughout the entire journey. In addition to sharing their knowledge of the region's history, culture, and natural wonders, they will:
- Support the group during daily hikes, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all travelers
- Provide detailed briefings on trail conditions, weather, and altitude considerations
- Coordinate logistics and arrange meals and transportation
- Offer basic first-aid assistance and emergency support if needed
As experienced hikers themselves, your Tour Director will be well-versed in mountain safety and trained in high-altitude first-aid procedures.
- One of the benefits of traveling with EF Adventures is our on tour emergency support team.
- Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
- This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
- As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
- Italy is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and 6 hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
- When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm in Italy.
- When you travel with EF Adventures, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
- Travel, when done responsibly, can have an enormous socioeconomic impact on communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at small businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
- Prepare for your trip: Be aware of monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market; learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette; and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
- When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
- EF Adventures encourages travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single-use plastics. You can cut back on generating plastic waste by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
- When you come across wild animals on tour, take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart: Don't touch or feed them, and maintain a respectful distance. The animals you encounter on your trip should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior.
- Furthermore, avoid buying exploitative animal products, like crafts made from animal parts or products tested on animals.
- If you feel we aren’t meeting any of these commitments, please let us know.
