Overwhelming awe meets heart-pumping hikes
Switzerland, Italy, and France share a border here—and the Alps that stitch them together are the reason you've come. Over twelve days, you'll hike through three countries and three distinct cultures, moving from the terraced vineyards above Lake Geneva to the shadow of the Matterhorn, across the Italian border into the Aosta Valley, and finally into Chamonix, where the Mont Blanc Massif fills every window. Along the way, you'll conquer the 5-Lakes Trail with the Matterhorn reflected in glacial tarns, push to Matterhorn Basecamp at 10,710 feet, hike a section of the legendary Tour du Mont Blanc, and ascend via cable car to L'Aiguille du Midi's summit at 12,605 feet. Between the big hikes, there's a walking tour of Roman-era Aosta, a cheese tasting in a centuries-old cellar, and a French pastry stop in Chamonix's cobblestone streets. Three languages, three cuisines, one unforgettable range.

Day 3: Lavaux Vineyard hike, wine tasting & lunch and optional mountain chalet fondue dinner
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Wine tasting
Tucked into the hillsides above Lake Geneva, the UNESCO-listed Lavaux wine region is one of Switzerland's most celebrated landscapes—a mosaic of terraced vineyards shaped by human hands since the 11th century. Your hike begins in Lutry, a medieval lakeside village of sun-warmed stone facades and vine-draped archways, and follows undulating vineyard paths as the shimmering expanse of Lake Geneva stretches below and the jagged silhouette of the Alps commands the horizon beyond. The trail climbs to a high point of approximately 1,791 feet before descending through the terraces toward Chexbres, where narrow alleys wind between centuries-old winegrowers' houses. From here, you'll make your way to a local winery for a tasting of Chasselas and Pinot Noir poured by the winery owner, paired with a picnic-style lunch of charcuterie, salad, and dessert with panoramic views of the vineyards. Cap off your day with an optional mountain excursion to a chalet for a traditional Swiss dinner high above Montreux.

Zermatt3 nights
Day 4: Travel to Zermatt & 5-Lakes Trail hike
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Today you leave the Lake Geneva region behind and head deeper into the Swiss Alps, arriving in one of the most iconic mountain towns on earth. The bus ride to Täsch takes about two hours—your luggage travels ahead while you board the local train for the short ride into car-free Zermatt, where the Matterhorn announces itself almost immediately above the rooftops. After a quick walk from the station—or a ride in one of Zermatt's distinctive electric taxis—you'll head straight to the Sunnegga funicular to begin the famous 5-Lakes Trail. The route winds past five glacial lakes—Leisee, Moosjisee, Grünsee, Grindjisee, and Stellisee—each offering its own angle on the Matterhorn's iconic pyramid. Those opting for the shorter route will cut across toward Grindjisee before rejoining the main trail and finishing at Stellisee near Blauherd, where the gondola drops back down to Sunnegga. Those continuing on the longer route will complete the full five-lake circuit, passing all lakes in sequence before taking the funicular back down to Zermatt.
5-Lakes Trail hike
- Option A: 2.9 miles, 1,302 ft gain
- Physical intensity: 2 out of 5
- Option B: 5.7 miles, 1,591 ft gain

- Hike the 5-Lakes Trail past glacial tarns reflecting the Matterhorn, with route options for shorter or longer distances.
- Have dinner with your group and share stories about your first day in Zermatt.
Day 5: Gornergrat hike & free evening in Zermatt
Included meal: Breakfast
Ready to explore the mountains you've been eyeing since you arrived? Today's hike begins at Riffelsee—a pristine glacial lake at 9,222 feet whose still waters offer mirror-perfect reflections of the Matterhorn on calm mornings. From here, the trail climbs steadily through high alpine terrain, gaining nearly 1,000 feet over rocky paths and open slopes as the surrounding peaks grow more imposing with every step. After roughly 40 minutes of sustained ascent, you'll reach the Gornergrat summit at 10,135 feet—where 29 four-thousand-meter peaks surround you in every direction, the Matterhorn's north face rising to the south and the Monte Rosa massif stretching across the eastern horizon. The Gorner Glacier system sprawls below, one of the largest glacial formations in the Alps. From the summit, the trail descends back toward Riffelsee, where those on the shorter route will board the Gornergrat Railway—Europe's highest open-air cogwheel train—back down to Zermatt. Those continuing on the longer route will push further downhill to Riffelalp before catching the train. The evening is yours: an included electric taxi ride takes you into the center of Zermatt for dinner and free time to explore.

- Head into Zermatt by electric taxi for a free evening of dinner and exploring.
Day 6: Matterhorn Basecamp hike
Included meal: Breakfast
Few mountains on earth command the imagination quite like the Matterhorn, and today's hike brings you as close to its legendary flanks as a day on foot can allow. A short gondola ride from Zermatt delivers you to Schwarzsee—"Black Lake"—at 8,474 feet, where the full drama of the surrounding peaks comes suddenly into view. From here, the trail sets off across open alpine terrain toward the base of the Matterhorn itself, passing the small chapel of Maria zum Schnee—Our Lady of the Snows—a place of quiet reverence where Matterhorn climbers have long paused before and after their ascents. Those choosing the shorter route will loop back to the gondola from here. For those continuing, the trail climbs in earnest through raw, rocky alpine landscape, with the Matterhorn's pyramidal silhouette growing more imposing with every step. The route culminates at Hörnlihütte at 10,710 feet—the famed basecamp perched at the foot of the northeast ridge that Edward Whymper and his team climbed during the mountain's first ascent in 1865. Linger over a picnic or a warm meal at the hut with the sheer rock face towering overhead, then retrace your steps back down to Schwarzsee for the gondola back to Zermatt.

- Eat your packed lunch or grab something at Hörnlihutt before embarking on your hike back down to Schwarzsee.
Aosta region2 nights
Day 7: Travel to Aosta region via the Great St. Bernard Pass & Aosta walking tour
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Dinner
Today you cross from Switzerland into Italy, trading the Valais Alps for the Valle d'Aosta—a region that has been a crossroads of Alpine civilization since Roman times. The journey south passes through the Great St. Bernard Pass, the historic mountain crossing on the Swiss-Italian border where travelers have free time to explore the Great St. Bernard Hospice and museum, walk the border between the two countries, and grab lunch on their own. Once you descend into Aosta, a local guide leads you through one of the most remarkably preserved Roman towns in Europe—past the Augustan Arch, the Roman Theater, the Praetorian Gates, the Forum Cryptoporticus, and the ancient city walls that have stood for more than 2,000 years. The day ends with a cheese tasting at a local cheese cellar, where you can sample fontina and blue cheese before dinner at your hotel.
- Visit the Great St. Bernard Pass to learn about the history and breeding of St. Bernard rescue dogs over the centuries.
- Discover why Aosta is called the "Little Rome of the Alps" as you walk past the Arch of Augustus, the Roman Theater, and the Praetorian Gates on a guided tour of the city.
- Dive into a cheese tasting at a local cellar, featuring fontina and blue cheese made by a local cheesemonger.
- Check in to your beautiful hotel (known as a relais), check out the spa, and indulge in a delicious dinner with your group.
Day 8: Tour du Mont Blanc hike
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
With easy access to some of the most iconic mountains in the Alps, the Aosta Valley is a fitting base for today's centerpiece: a point-to-point hike along Stage 5 of the Tour du Mont Blanc, one of the world's most celebrated long-distance trails. A private taxi from your hotel delivers you to the hamlet of Plampincieux at 5,200 feet—the bus can't reach this trailhead—where the Dora di Ferret stream accompanies your first steps and the great white dome of Mont Blanc looms at the valley's head. The trail climbs steadily through the lush Leutchey-dèsot pasture before arriving at Rifugio Bertone at approximately 6,700 feet, where lunch awaits and the entire Val Ferret unfolds below. Those seeking more will push on from here, climbing to Testa Bernarda and Mont de la Saxe Lake for sweeping views of the Grandes Jorasses and the glaciated massif of Mont Blanc before descending to Courmayeur, where free time awaits in this charming town at the foot of the mountain.
Tour du Mont Blanc hike

- Explore Courmayeur, an idyllic town located at the foot of Mont Blanc, on your own after the hike.
Chamonix region3 nights
Day 9: Travel to Chamonix & Chamonix walking tour
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Tasting
After a leisurely morning in the Aosta Valley, you'll board the bus for Entrèves, where a light pizza lunch awaits before you cross into France through the Mont Blanc Tunnel. On the other side, Chamonix announces itself exactly as it should—with the jagged Aiguilles Rouges on one side and the Mont Blanc Massif on the other, the valley floor a lively mix of cobblestone streets and mountain culture that has been drawing alpinists since the 18th century. Your Tour Director will walk you through town, stopping at a local bakery for a French pastry tasting before free time to explore on your own. Pick up a packed lunch for tomorrow's hike while you're out—you'll be glad you did.
- Stop in Entrèves for a light pizza lunch before crossing into France through the Mont Blanc Tunnel to settle into your hotel in Chamonix.
- Get to know Chamonix on a walk with your Tour Director, featuring a tasting of a local French pastry, then take the rest of the evening to eat dinner and do as you please in town.
Day 10: Aiguilles Rouges hike
Included meal: Breakfast
Your first full hiking day in Chamonix begins with a bus ride to the Flégère lift, followed by the Index Chair Lift to reach your starting point at 8,513 feet. The Aiguilles Rouges—"Red Peaks," named for their distinctive sunset glow—form a protected natural reserve of granite spires and glacial lakes that contrast sharply with the ice-covered Mont Blanc massif across the valley. From this elevated perch, the trail begins with a prolonged gradual descent before climbing steadily toward Le Col des Glières at 8,074 feet. The route then ascends to Lacs Noirs at 8,317 feet—dark waters reflecting the surrounding peaks—where you'll stop for a packed picnic lunch. After refueling, the trail descends past the stunning Lac Cornu before reaching Planpraz at 6,562 feet, where those on the shorter route will take the gondola back down to Chamonix. Day 11: L'Aiguille du Midi Summit & Grand Balcon Nord hike
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
Your final full day in the Alps saves the most dramatic moment for last. An early walk from your hotel brings you to the Téléphérique Aiguille du Midi, where a cable car ascends to the summit at 12,605 feet—the highest lift-accessed point in the world, and the second most visited tourist attraction in France after the Eiffel Tower. Spend time on the viewing platforms with Mont Blanc’s summit filling the sky above, then board the cable car down to the Plan de l’Aiguille midway station at 7,539 feet to begin your hike. The Grand Balcon Nord trail descends through rugged terrain with constant views of the Mont Blanc Massif, passing Lac Bleu at the base of the Aiguilles de Chamonix before continuing to Signal Forbes—a dramatic viewpoint above the Mer de Glace, France’s largest glacier. From here, the historic cogwheel train winds back down to Chamonix. Those choosing the longer route will descend closer to the Mer de Glace for views of the Grotte de Glace—an ice cave carved annually inside the glacier—before hiking back up to catch the train. Tonight, gather with your group for a Farewell Dinner in Chamonix, toasting to the peaks, the trails, and the memories made across three countries.

Day 12: Fly home
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Well, it’s time to go home. How are your legs feeling? Tired, most likely. But you’re probably feeling accomplished, too. And rightfully so, because you just crushed a whole lot of hiking through Switzerland, Italy, and France. You’ll transfer to the Geneva airport (about 90 minutes) sometime in the morning for your international flight home.
Annecy extension
Not ready to leave the Alps? Extend your adventure with two additional nights in Annecy, France—a town that earns its nickname "the Venice of the Alps" with canals threading through a medieval old town, a pristine alpine lake often called the purest in Europe, and a relaxed pace that makes it the perfect place to decompress after a week of big hikes. Wander the cobblestone streets of Vieille Ville, stop for a raclette tasting, and take in the mountain backdrop from the shores of Lac d'Annecy. Those who want a bit more structure can join an optional sunset boat cruise on the lake or venture into the surrounding Haute-Savoie countryside to explore the dramatic Gorges du Fier and the fairy-tale Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard.
Annecy2 nights
Day 12: Travel to Annecy, walking tour of the city & optional Lake Annecy sunset boat cruise
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
Annecy sits at the northern tip of its namesake lake, ringed by mountains and threaded with canals that have been flowing through the old town since the 16th century. After arriving from Chamonix, you'll have free time for lunch before joining a local guide for a walking tour through the heart of the city. The route passes the pristine shores of Lac d'Annecy, winds through the whimsical canals of Vieille Ville, crosses the Pont des Amours, and takes in the Jardins de l'Europe and the historic Église Notre-Dame-de-Liesse. Along the way, you'll stop for a raclette tasting—Annecy sits just across the border from the Swiss canton where the dish originates, and the local shops take it seriously. In the evening, consider joining the optional sunset boat cruise on the lake, where the surrounding peaks catch the last of the day's light.
- Travel from Chamonix to Annecy and explore the city on a guided walking tour through Vieille Ville, along the canals, and past Lac d'Annecy.
- Stop for a raclette tasting at a local shop along the way.
- Opt for the Lake Annecy sunset boat cruise or take an evening to yourself.
Day 13: Optional Haute-Savoie excursion or free day in Annecy
Included meal: Breakfast
For those who want one last adventure before heading home, today's optional excursion ventures into the Haute-Savoie countryside to explore two of the region's most distinctive landmarks. The Gorges du Fier is a narrow river gorge carved through limestone over millennia, its suspended walkways threading above rushing water between sheer rock walls draped in moss and shadow. From there, you'll continue to the Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard—a turreted medieval castle perched above the lake that is said to have inspired Charles Perrault's Sleeping Beauty. Those staying in Annecy have the full day to themselves: wander the streets, lounge on the lake's sun-warmed beaches, or try your hand at one of the water sports on offer. The evening wraps up with a Farewell Drink together before your final night in France.
- Join the optional Haute-Savoie excursion to explore the dramatic Gorges du Fier and the fairy-tale Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard.

- When you travel with EF Adventures, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
- Travel, when done responsibly, can have an enormous socioeconomic impact on communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at small businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
- Prepare for your trip: Be aware of monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market; learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette; and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
- When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
- EF Adventures encourages travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single-use plastics. You can cut back on generating plastic waste by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
- When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
- When you come across wild animals on tour, take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart: Don't touch or feed them, and maintain a respectful distance. The animals you encounter on your trip should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior.
- Furthermore, avoid buying exploitative animal products, like crafts made from animal parts or products tested on animals.
- If you feel we aren’t meeting any of these commitments, please let us know.
