As you ascend to Männlichen, you'll gain over 4,200 feet in elevation, watching as the Grindelwald Valley shrinks beneath you. Your hike will take you to Kleine Scheidegg, a high mountain pass that has long served as the starting point for attempts on the Eiger’s daunting north face. Engelberg2 nights
Day 7: Cheese farm lunch and tasting & travel to Engelberg
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Tasting
It’s time to leave the Bernese Oberland region behind and enter the next locale—Engelberg, central Switzerland’s largest winter and summer holiday destination. Here, the rustic gateway town revolves mostly around a 12th-century Benedictine monastery (monks still live and teach here!). You’ve embarked on a few difficult hikes in a row, so today is a rest day that focuses on a different side of Swiss culture—cheese! You’ll head straight to the source for lunch and a tasting at a cheese farm, sampling homemade dishes like raclette, which involved scraping melted cheese onto various foods.
- Tour an authentic cheese farm, observing the resident cows and goats, then dive deep into the art of cheesemaking and production.
- Sample different dishes, like raclette, highlighting the farm’s house-made cheese during lunch.
- Embark on a short digestive walk Bürgenstock after lunch for panoramic views Mt. Rigi, Mt. Pilatus & Lake Lucerne.
- Travel to Engelberg to check in and relax at your new hotel and explore the alpine town’s highlights (like the 12th-century monastery) during a free evening.
Day 8: Fürenalp Valley hike
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
Your final hike in Engelberg offers a perfect summary of Swiss alpine beauty: lush valleys, traditional dairy farms, and a dramatic waterfall, all set against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks. This challenging hike will lead you through this pristine landscape, past the impressive Stäuber waterfall and an alpine dairy, a perfect photo op along the way. Lucerne region extension
Switzerland may be small, but it’s a country packed with tons of charm. You’ve had a good overview of some of the best it has to offer in terms of nature, but now it’s time for a bit of city sightseeing (and some more nature, don’t worry) in one of the most iconic spots of them all, Lucerne. The namesake Lake Lucerne and surrounding mountains form a backdrop as dramatic as Norway's fjords. But some of the real highlights of the region are the beautifully preserved medieval buildings and landmarks like the 14th-century Chapel Bridge, one of Europe’s oldest covered bridges, that links the New Town to the Rathausquai in the medieval Old Town. The hiking doesn’t need to be over just yet, either. On an optional excursion, you’ll have a chance to explore more lakeside trails hiking around Mount Rigi, dubbed “Queen of the Mountains,” which extends high between lakes Lucerne, Zug and Laurez.
Lucerne region2 nights
Day 9: Travel to Lucerne & walking tour of Lucerne
Included meal: Breakfast
Nestled on the shores of Lake Lucerne and surrounded by snowcapped peaks, Lucerne seamlessly blends medieval with modern. And what better way to learn about a city than through the eyes of a local guide? On your walking tour, you’ll discover landmarks like one of the city’s most famous monuments, the rock Lion of Lucerne, an image of a dying lion carved into the cliffside to commemorate the Swiss guardsmen who were killed during the French Revolution. Explore the cobbled streets of the car-free Old Town and make your way past Altes Rathaus, the Old Town Hall.
- Travel from Engelberg to the captivating city of Lucerne, surrounded by mountains and sitting on the edge of its namesake lake.
- Join a local guide for a tour of Lucerne's Old Town, discovering landmarks like the Lion Monument and the historic Chapel Bridge.
- Enjoy free time to explore Lucerne at your own pace, perhaps visiting the Jesuit Church or strolling along the lakefront promenade.
Day 10: Optional Mount Rigi expedition or free day in Lucerne Region
Included meal: Breakfast
Your final day in Switzerland can be whatever you want it to be! If your legs can take one last outdoor adventure, join the optional excursion to Mount Rigi, a pioneer mountain of alpine tourism back in the 18th century, for a hike and the chance to see Lake Lucerne and the Swiss Alps from a bird’s eye view. If you prefer to relax in town and have a free day, enjoy Lucerne’s green side strolling through its parks and gardens, or visiting the city’s largest historic square, Mühlenplatz, which dates to the late Middle Ages.
- Join the optional excursion, which includes a boat ride along Lake Lucerne and cogwheel train ride on your way up to Mount Rigi’s summit for 360º views of the snowcapped alps and lowlands.
- Spend the day exploring Lucerne (for those not interested in the Mount Rigi excursion)—consider visiting the Swiss Museum of Transport, which is actually Switzerland’s most popular museum.
Flight home
Day 11: Fly home
You’ve savored a few extra days journeying around Lucerne, but the time has come to say goodbye to Switzerland. Hop on the hour-long transfer from the Lucerne region to the Zurich airport for your international flight home.

If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center.
- If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
- Round-trip flights booked through EF Adventures arrive in and depart from Zurich.

Travelers who booked their own flights are responsible for securing their own transfer upon arrival, and may request a departure transfer with EF Adventures for an additional cost.
- When you arrive in Zurich, an EF representative will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with an EF sign or a sign with your name(s). If you don’t see a representative immediately, please be patient and stay in the arrivals area. They may be assisting another traveler who has also just arrived and will be back shortly.

You can cut back on generating plastic waste by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
- When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
- When you come across wild animals on tour, take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart: Don't touch or feed them, and maintain a respectful distance. The animals you encounter on your trip should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior.
- Furthermore, avoid buying exploitative animal products, like crafts made from animal parts or products tested on animals.
- If you feel we aren’t meeting any of these commitments, please let us know.
