Taupō2 nights
Day 4: Waitomo Caves and glowworm grotto blackwater rafting & travel to Taupō
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Your first stop on this adrenaline-packed itinerary: the Waitomo Caves and glowworm grotto. Today’s rafting trip takes you through one of New Zealand’s most stunning natural sites as you move under a sky of glowworms in Ruakuri Cave, weave and climb over rocks, and jump from tiny waterfalls. Up next: Taupō, whose namesake lake (which is more of an inland sea) measures about the same size as Singapore and was created nearly 2,000 years ago during a volcanic eruption—which is why you’ll notice geysers and bubbling mud pools.
Waitomo Caves and glowworm grotto blackwater rafting
- Duration: 3 hours
You may be familiar with bioluminescent bays, but have you ever seen a glowworm-lined cave that’s as impressive as staring at an entire galaxy? Gear up and test your rafting skills as you descend through a cave to an underground river, floating along fast waters and jumping off not-so-high waterfalls while being surrounded by the fairy-like twinkle of glowworms lining the sides of the Ruakuri Cave. Don’t forget a towel and change of clothes for after the tour.
- Head out from Auckland to Waitomo Caves Village where you can enjoy lunch at your own pace during free time.
- Get your blood rushing on a rafting tour through the nearly pitch-black Waitomo Caves and glowworm grotto.
- Continue on to Taupō, settling into your hotel on the shores of the country’s largest lake.
- Relax and chat about the day’s highlights during a group dinner at a restaurant in Taupō.
Day 5: Tongariro Alpine Crossing hike

Lace up your hiking shoes and get ready to set out to Tongariro National Park, whose moon-like crater lakes, lava flows, and steaming vents are the result of 275,000 years of volcanic and glacial activity. Part of the legendary Tongariro Northern Circuit—one of New Zealand's premier Great Walks—the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is ranked among the greatest day walks in New Zealand for its thrilling variety: climb the Devil's Staircase for clear valley views across ancient lava flows, descend past jewel-toned lakes over loose volcanic rock, and wind through paths of lush native forests.

Part of New Zealand's celebrated Great Rides network of bike routes, the trails here are ranked among the best in the world for mountain biking with stretches catering to beginners and pros alike. You’ll have a chance to cruise along the tracks while taking in cultural sites like Māori carvings on the clockwise ride around the forest. Later this afternoon, you can opt to keep the Māori immersion going with an authentic dinner and discussion on more of the area’s history and culture on the optional excursion to a Māori village.

- Elevation change: 1,699 ft gain
Strap on a helmet and join the pros (guides, that is) on a scenic mountain bike ride through towering redwoods in New Zealand’s “mountain biking mecca,” Whakarewarewa Forest. Don’t let the title intimidate you—trails cater to all skill levels, and you’ll join others with similar riding abilities on a 3- to 4-hour loop riding clockwise around the forest, cruising past Lake Tikitapu, and enjoying other cultural sites like the Te Pūtake o Tawa hub and Māori artworks along the way.
Note: Distance will vary depending on your ability and interest.
- Embark on a mountain biking tour through one of the world’s most popular mountain biking parks, pedaling through the Redwoods of the Whakarewarewa Forest.

Step off the gondola for the start of today’s moderate hike to the summit of Mount Cardrona, the highest point in the resort, hovering more than a mile above sea level. Day 11: Jet boat on Waiau River, hike on Kepler Track & optional excursion to Te Anau glowworm caves
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
You may recognize the water you’ll be whisking across today from the opening scenes of Lord of the Rings—and the Waiau River is every bit as picture-perfect in person. Take a thrilling jet boat ride to Lake Manapouri, where you’ll step off and start your hike in Fiordland National Park, whose glacier-carved fjords and glassy lakes make it one of New Zealand’s natural icons. Today you’ll conquer a section of the Kepler Track, another one of New Zealand’s Great Walks—trails that traverse through some of the country’s most epic landscapes, wildlife, and cultural heritage. Pass through limestone caverns, alpine plant-filled meadows, and mystical beech forest, learning about the native flora and fauna along the way. Day 12: Kayaking in Milford Sound & travel to Queenstown
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
It’s time to head deeper into Fiordland National Park to another bucket list moment: Milford Sound, a remote and unspoiled fiord that was only accessible by foot or boat for centuries. The scenery here is dramatic, to say the least. Picture craggy mountain peaks, inky water, and forests sprawling along the cliffsides. Grab your paddles and take in views of the towering cliffs and roaring waterfalls before making the scenic drive out of Fiordland National Park to Queenstown.

Day 13: Whitewater rafting on the Kawarau River and free afternoon in Queenstown

Queenstown has been dubbed the “Adventure Capital of the World,” since it’s the birthplace of both bungy jumping and tandem paragliding. But its glacier-carved landscape has drawn athletes and adventure-seekers alike to its mountains, lakes, and rivers—which you’ll experience yourself today while whitewater rafting on the Kawarau River. After a thrilling experience on the water, you’ll have a majority of the day to explore Queenstown and choose your own adventure, whether that be kayaking, hiking, or mountain biking.

The Kawarau River cuts through some of Queenstown's most dramatic landscape, and you'll witness it all from your raft as you tackle Class II and III rapids. The highlight of the journey is the famous Dog Leg rapid—at a quarter-mile long, it's the longest commercially rafted rapid in all of New Zealand. Between the adrenaline-pumping stretches, you'll have moments to catch your breath and take in the rugged canyon walls rising above you and the pristine turquoise water flowing beneath your paddle.

- When you travel with EF Adventures, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
- Travel, when done responsibly, can have an enormous socioeconomic impact on communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at small businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
- Prepare for your trip: Be aware of monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market; learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette; and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
- When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
- EF Adventures encourages travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single-use plastics. You can cut back on generating plastic waste by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
- When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
- When you come across wild animals on tour, take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart: Don’t touch or feed them, and maintain a respectful distance. The animals you encounter on your trip should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior.
- Furthermore, avoid buying exploitative animal products, like crafts made from tortoiseshell or meals such as shark fin soup.
- If you feel we aren’t meeting any of these commitments, please let us know.
