Day 1: Fly to Catania
Head to the airport and board your overnight flight to Italy. Try and catch some z's—you’ll want to be well-rested for the adventure ahead.
Taormina Region3 nights
Day 2: Arrive in Catania & transfer to the Taormina region
Included meal: Welcome dinner
Welcome to the Taormina region! You might be familiar with this area from its starring role in Season 2 of White Lotus. Located on the eastern coast of Sicily, Taormina is known for its excellent wine, particularly grapes grown on the slopes of Mount Etna. The culinary and drinking portion of your adventure starts at tonight’s gathering.
- Meet an EF representative at the airport.
- Transfer about an hour to your hotel in the Taormina region to check in and enjoy some down time.
- Get to know your fellow travelers and Tour Director during a Welcome Orientation.
- Savor your first taste of Italian food with new friends at your Welcome Dinner.

Day 3: Castelmola loop hike, walking tour of Taormina, and optional Sicilian cooking class & dinner

Today’s hike starts and ends in Castelmola, a tiny village built around the ruins of a 16th-century Norman castle—all perched atop a hill overlooking Taormina. After your morning hike, you’ll be treated to a guided tour of Taormina, one of the most beautiful Sicilian towns in Italy, known for picturesque piazzas and beautiful beaches. Later on, keep the culture coming during an optional Sicilian cooking class & dinner.
Castelmola loop hike

Lace up your hiking boots for a loop hike through the mountains above Castelmola. The trail takes you up to the summit of Punta Mole, rewarding you with incredible views of Taormina and the Ionian Sea. As you descend, you'll pass by the base of Mount Venere before winding your way back to Castelmola. Along the route, you might spot the medieval Castello Saraceno and the Madonna della Rocca Church built into the rock face. In Castelmola, take time to explore the narrow streets, perhaps enjoying a glass of vino alle mandorle (local almond wine).

Day 4: Mount Etna and Valle del Bove hike & Mount Etna wine tasting

Did you know Mount Etna is one of the world’s most active volcanoes, known for its frequent eruptions? (Don’t worry, safety precautions are always taken during active periods). Mount Etna’s frequent activity makes it a focal point for scientific study, with a network of monitoring stations providing valuable data on volcanic behavior. Your volcanologist guide on today’s hike will share insights into the volcano’s history, formation, and ongoing activity. A highlight of the hike will be laying your eyes on Valle del Bove, a vast, horseshoe-shaped depression that illustrates the dramatic effects of past eruptions. Post-hike, you’ll visit a winery and taste wines that are actually cultivated in volcanic soil—just when you thought this day couldn’t get more volcanic!
Mount Etna & Valle del Bove hike with volcanologists

Your adventure begins with a cable car ride from Rifugio Sapienza, ascending to an altitude of 2,500 feet. Accompanied by a certified volcano expert guide, you’ll hike past lava flow channels to reach the crater rim. The volcanologist will explain the volcano’s history and formation, including the creation of Valle del Bove—a vast caldera on Etna’s eastern side. You’ll learn about the diverse volcanic rocks and minerals that make up the moonlike landscape around you. After you take plenty of photos and soak up the amazing views of Sicily and the Mediterranean, start your descent back down the mountain to the cable car where your hike began.

Day 5: Sea kayaking in Taormina, travel to Syracuse & walking tour of Syracuse

You’re on the move—trading the beautiful coast of Taormina for the (also) beautiful coast of Syracuse. Before you leave, you’ll spend the morning on a refreshing sea kayaking adventure near Taormina. Then, you’ll journey south to Syracuse, a city with over 2,700 years of rich Sicilian heritage. Located in southeastern Sicily, Syracuse was once one of the major powers of the Mediterranean world. Its strategic position and natural harbor have shaped its history, leaving a legacy of Greek, Roman, and Baroque influences. Your hotel, situated right on the water, offers a perfect base to explore this enchanting city.
Sea kayaking in Taormina
- Duration: 1 hour
Discover Taormina's coastal wonders from a whole new perspective on a transparent sea kayak. Glide over crystal-clear waters, marveling at the colorful marine life beneath your feet—without even getting in the water. Your adventure takes you to the enchanting Blue Grotto, where sunlight dances on the water, creating a natural light show. Continue on to Isola Bella, a tiny nature reserve often called the "Pearl of the Ionian Sea" due to its lush vegetation and pristine beauty. Explore its rugged coastline up close before returning to shore.

Day 6: E-ike ride around Modica, lunch at cheese farm & walking tour of Modica

Today you’ll head to the town of Modica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a sweet secret: chocolate made using an ancient Aztec recipe. But before you indulge, you’ll earn your treat with a scenic e-bike ride through the rolling hills and olive groves surrounding the city. Part-way through the ride, once you’ve worked up an appetite, you’ll visit a cheese farm for a tour of the grounds and a farmhouse lunch. Back in Modica, you’ll tour the city and savor the fruits of your (morning) labor at Antica Dolceria Bonajuto, Sicily’s oldest chocolate factory. And that is how you have a fabulous day in Sicily.

Hop on a comfortable e-touring bike for your journey through the heart of southeastern Sicily. Departing from Baroque Modica, you'll pedal through a landscape that goes from urban to rural, winding past olive groves and ancient carob trees. After stopping for lunch at a family-owned cheese farm, you'll get back on your bike and continue passing by canyons and grassy knolls until you return to Modica to dive into its chocolate culture.

Later, reflect on your Sicilian journey during a special Farewell Dinner at a centuries-old estate owned by a local countess, where you’ll enjoy antipasti and wine served below the mulberry trees, before savoring an unforgettable meal inside stables surrounding an 18th century courtyard.
Boat ride & snorkeling in Plemmirio Nature Reserve

Your aquatic journey takes you to the stunning Plemmirio Nature Reserve, a protected marine area off the coast of Syracuse. Thanks to its protected status, the reserve is home to over 130 species of fish, including colorful wrasses and groupers, as well as rare black coral and Neptune grass meadows. As you cruise, you'll have the opportunity to dive in and snorkel among marine life like anemones, corvine crabs, hermit crabs, and a variety of Mediterranean fish. For those preferring to stay dry, you can stay on the boat to enjoy the sun and coastal scenery. Prosecco and fresh fruit are included on the boat.

It’s time to say arrivederci to Sicily, but you’ll be going home with lots of great memories and new-found friends. Transfer about 1 hour to the Catania airport and catch your international flight home.
Palermo extension
Not ready to say goodbye to Italy? Palermo’s got you. Sicily’s capital is a vibrant and historic city located on the island’s northern coast (you’ve only been on the eastern coast so far). Known for its rich cultural heritage, stunning architecture, and lively street markets, it serves as a dynamic hub of Sicilian life and history. During this 3-night extension, you’ll taste wine and food in the charming coastal town of Cefalù and explore many of Palermo’s landmarks, from the eclectic Palermo Cathedral to the Arab-Norman Palazzo dei Normanni. You'll also have the opportunity to join optional excursions to the town of Monreale and the ancient ruins of Segesta and Erice.

Day 8: Travel to Palermo via Cefalù wine tasting and lunch

Today you’ll visit an agriturismo near Cefalù, a charming coastal town that sits between steep cliffs and the blue Tyrrhenian Sea. The unique landscape around Cefalù, with its coastal climate and nearby hills, creates excellent conditions for growing grapes—which is why you’re getting a taste of Sicily's wine and food culture here before heading to the lively city of Palermo.
- Travel about 3 hours from Syracuse to an agriturismo near Cefalù, for a wine tasting and lunch with stunning views of the Madonie mountain range.
- Continue on to Palermo, get situated at your new hotel, and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.
Day 9: Walking tour of Palermo & optional visit to Monreale

Your morning walking tour will unveil the city’s rich history, from the ancient harbor to its Baroque architecture. And if you’re looking to go deeper into Sicily’s artistic world, join the optional afternoon visit to Monreale.

Today you have two great options—the whole day to do as you please, or you can take advantage of the optional tour of the ancient ruins in Segesta & Erice. If you spend the day exploring, why not take a tour of Teatro Massimo, Italy's largest opera house? Or maybe visit the Vucciria Market, known for its lively Italian atmosphere and an array of street food stalls offering Sicilian delicacies such as panelle (chickpea fritters) and arancini (rice balls).

- In order to enter Italy, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
- We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
- U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
- Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these countries without a visa, starting in 2026, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center.
- If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
- Round-trip flights booked through EF Adventures arrive in and depart from Catania. On the tour extension, flights depart from Palermo.
- Transfers to and from the airport at the beginning and end of the tour are included for travelers who purchased their flights through EF Adventures. Travelers who booked their own flights are responsible for securing their own transfer upon arrival, and may request a departure transfer with EF Adventures for an additional cost.
- When you arrive in Catania, an EF Adventures representative will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with an EF Adventures sign or a sign with your name(s). If you don’t see a representative immediately, please be patient and stay in the arrivals area. They may be assisting another traveler who has also just arrived and will be back shortly.

This is a steady-paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

- Daily bus time varies and can be lengthy
Climate considerations
- Sicily has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters.
- Summer temperatures (June to August) can range from 75°F to 85°F (24°C to 29°C) or higher.
- Spring and fall are milder, with temperatures ranging from 60°F to 75°F (16°C to 24°C).
- Be prepared for warmer temperatures when hiking Mount Etna or biking in the countryside.
Physical activity & tour pace extra info
- EF Adventures and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
- This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The rest of the group cannot miss any scheduled activities because of the needs of an individual.

- Please note that our travelers are limited to one checked bag and one carry-on bag per person due to storage limitations on buses.
- Some airlines may impose additional charges if you exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. Be advised that you’re responsible for any baggage fees incurred.

- Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
- Travelers must be able to manage their luggage throughout tour; porters aren’t guaranteed at hotels and airports.
We recommend packing lightweight, quick-dry, and loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered. Sicily's climate is Mediterranean, so breathable fabrics are essential. Don't forget to pack:
- Comfortable hiking shoes or trail runners with good traction
- Water shoes or sandals with straps for water activities
- Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants for sun protection
- Sunscreen and a sun hat
- A swimsuit, as there are opportunities to swim on tour
- A daypack to carry essentials like water, snacks, and sunscreen
- A refillable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the tour (and cut down on single use plastic waste)
- Binoculars, in case you want to get a closer look at local wildlife and scenery
- A collapsible walking stick for the Mount Etna hike (some travelers find them useful)
- Dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance
- Any personal medications, including motion sickness remedies for boat rides
- Your medical insurance card, in case of emergencies (pack this in your carry-on)
- EF Adventures handpicks every hotel you’ll stay at, striking a balance between comfort, location, sustainability, and local charm.
- Specific properties will vary based on your departure date, but are typically three-to-five-star hotels; always include private bathrooms; and usually have in-room safes for valuables. Additionally, your hotels will have Wi-Fi, but access may be limited to common areas. There may also not be elevators.
- Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee that your accommodations will have laundry services or facilities. We recommend checking directly with your hotels once they’ve been confirmed, about 30 days prior to departure.
- Some hotels on this tour are situated on narrow streets; as such, our buses can’t drop you off right out front. In these instances, you’ll have to walk your luggage to the property, no more than a few blocks.
- Please be advised that the strength of the air conditioning in European hotels/buildings is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada.
- Italy operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and use Types C, F, or L plugs with two or three small, round pins.
- Excursions are available for purchase prior to departure, and most excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app.
- We recommend purchasing excursions at least 3 days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.
- Optional excursions may be canceled on tour due to reasons like low enrollment, weather or unexpected closures. If an excursion you signed up for is canceled, you will be refunded the full cost of the excursion. Please note it may take up to 60 days for your refund to be processed.
- Your Tour Director may offer their own optional excursions which can only be purchased on tour via cash (in local currency).
- At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website at cdc.gov.
- If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies please notify EF Adventures at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
- If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour and any possible delays encountered.
- There are inherent risks associated with adventure activities including biking, hiking, and snorkeling, particularly for those with pre-existing medical conditions. Discuss your planned activities with your doctor or healthcare provider for the best advice on participation.
- Travelers prone to seasickness should note that this tour includes boat rides.
- This tour includes one lunch and three dinners. They may be set menus, buffets, or family-style meals, depending on the location. Dinners also include one glass of beer, wine, juice or a soft drink, as well as water, coffee, and tea.
- Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
- Sicilian cuisine in particular is heavily influenced by Spanish, Greek, and Arab traditions. The Spanish brought New World influences to the region in the form of tomatoes, chocolate, and maize, while the Arab influence can be tasted in recipes that include rice, spinach, saffron, and citrus fruits. Regional specialties include arancini, cannoli, and granita.
- Tips for meals, bus drivers, porterage (if applicable), and local guides for adventure activities are included in the price of your tour.
- At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
- We recommend tipping the equivalent of $15-$20 USD per person per day for your Tour Director.
- Tips can only be paid in cash.
- You will use the euro on this tour.
- Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
- We strongly advise that you take debit and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
- You can use most cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
- International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you don’t already have at least one card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.

As an active individual themselves, your Tour Director will participate in many of the same adventure activities as you and is trained in safety procedures to ensure the well-being of the group.

- As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.

- Prepare for your trip: Be aware of monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market; learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette; and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
- When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
- EF Adventures encourages travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single-use plastics. You can cut back on generating plastic waste by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
- When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
- When you come across wild animals on tour, take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart: Don't touch or feed them, and maintain a respectful distance. The animals you encounter on your trip should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior.
- Furthermore, avoid buying exploitative animal products, like crafts made from animal parts or products tested on animals.
