Day 5: Travel to the South Coast & hike along Waterfall Way

You're off to explore Iceland's South Coast, a region of breathtaking contrasts and natural wonders. This area is famous not only for its stunning waterfalls and otherworldly black sand beaches, but also for its massive glaciers and ethereal glacier lagoons. Today, you’ll get up close with the raw power of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, the latter standing 197 feet tall and 82 feet wide. And just in case that isn’t enough waterfall for you, you’ll hike a portion of the Fimmvörðuháls Trail called Waterfall Way, where you’ll pass several impressive falls. Make sure to take a moment to appreciate and soak in the dramatic beauty all around you—it’s really something.

Start by admiring the awe-inspiring Skógafoss waterfall before ascending the adjacent staircase to start on a section of the 15-mile Fimmvörðuháls Trail. This portion of the trail is known as the Waterfall Way hike, a section that passes by several waterfalls—Hestavadsfoss, Fosstorfufoss, Steinbogafoss, Fremri-Fellsfoss, Innri-Fellsfoss and Skalabrekkufoss (to name a few).

Day 6: Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon kayaking & optional glacier hiking in Skaftafell

Today is going to be epic. And it doesn’t get much more epic than glaciers. First up, you’ll hop in a kayak in Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, which was created by the retreating Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Then, if you choose to partake in the optional excursion, you’ll swap your paddle for some crampons and step onto the surface of Falljökull Glacier for an extraordinary hiking experience in Vatnajökull National Park. There’s no doubt the South Coast continues to amaze.
Kayaking on Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon

Glide through the serene waters of Jökulsárlón, a glacier lagoon dotted with icebergs calved from Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier. This kayaking tour offers an intimate encounter with the lagoon's frozen giants, against a backdrop of breathtaking glacial landscapes. As you paddle, keep an eye out for seabirds above you and seals lounging on the ice. Afterwards, grab some lunch on your own and walk on the black sand of nearby Diamond Beach.

Then, in the afternoon, you'll dive into Iceland's Viking past in Borgarnes on your way back to Reykjavík.

Know before you go
- In order to enter Iceland, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
- Some travelers may be routinely questioned by Icelandic border security about details of their tour, including their tour guide. Please note that EF Adventures and your Tour Director work directly with a locally based agency to provide Icelandic guides throughout your tour.
- We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
- Passport holders from visa-exempt countries like the U.S. and Canada will need to register for an ETIAS travel authorization to enter certain European countries. Even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these 30 countries without a visa, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you’ll only need to complete the form once.
- All travelers will be responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center.
- If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
- Round-trip flights booked through EF Adventures arrive in and depart from Reykjavík.
- Transfers to and from the airport at the beginning and end of the tour are included for travelers who purchased their flights through EF Adventures. Travelers who booked their own flights are responsible for securing their own transfer upon arrival, and may request a departure transfer with EF Adventures for an additional cost.
- When you arrive in Reykjavík, an EF Adventures representative will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with an EF Adventures sign or a sign with your name(s). If you don’t see a representative immediately, please be patient and stay in the arrivals area. They may be assisting another traveler who has also just arrived and will be back shortly.
- Depending on the time of year, some travelers may be required to spend an extra night in the U.S. before boarding their connecting flight home. In these cases, EF Adventures will reserve your hotel and you'll arrive home one day after the last day of the tour.

Tour pacing
This is a very fast-paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

- Most days and evenings full of included activities (more if you add excursions)
- Most transportation by bus
- Daily bus time varies and can be lengthy
Climate considerations
- Iceland has a subarctic climate with cool summers and mild winters. In winter, it's strongly recommended that travelers are prepared for wet, windy and cold climate conditions.
- Summer temperatures (June to August) can range from 50°F to 60°F
- Winter temperatures (November to March) can range from 30°F to 40°F
- Weather can be unpredictable and change quickly, so be prepared for various conditions.
- Daylight is limited during the winter; December sees on average only 4.5 hours of sunlight each.
Physical activity & tour pace extra info
- EF Adventures and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
- This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The rest of the group cannot miss any scheduled activities because of the needs of an individual.

- Sunglasses and sunscreen (the sun can be intense, even on cloudy days)
- A daypack to carry essentials like water, snacks, and extra layers
- A refillable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the tour (and cut down on single use plastic waste)
- Binoculars, in case you want to get a closer look at local wildlife and scenery.
- A collapsible walking stick for long hikes (some travelers find them useful)
- Dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance
- Any personal medications, including motion sickness remedies for boat rides
- Your medical insurance card, in case of emergencies (pack this in your carry-on)

- Specific properties may vary based on your departure date, but are typically three-to-five-star hotels; always include private bathrooms; and usually have in-room safes for valuables. Additionally, your hotels will have Wi-Fi, but access may be limited to common areas.

- This tour includes three lunches and three dinners. They may be set menus, buffets, or family-style meals, depending on the location. Dinners also include one glass of beer, wine, juice or a soft drink, as well as water, coffee, and tea.
- Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
- Due to its remote location in the North Atlantic, Icelandic cuisine relies on traditional, locally sourced ingredients from the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding mountains, which many travelers may be unfamiliar with. Both fresh and dried fish, including herring, cod, and shark, are important culinary staples. Other staples include Icelandic lamb, which is considered to be some of the best in the world, as well as pylsa (hot dogs) and skyr cheese. - At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
- We recommend tipping the equivalent of $15-$20 USD per person per day for your Tour Director.

- Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.

- When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
- When you come across wild animals on tour, take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart: Don’t touch or feed them, and maintain a respectful distance. The animals you encounter on your trip should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior.
- Furthermore, avoid buying exploitative animal products, like crafts made from tortoiseshell or meals such as shark fin soup.
