Welcome to Italy! After landing in Venice, you’ll head straight north and watch the landscape transform before your eyes—flat coastal plains give way to rolling hills, then suddenly, the limestone spires of the Dolomites come into view. Once you’ve settled into your mountain base in the central Dolomites region, it’s time to meet your fellow cyclists over orientation drinks, followed by a proper Italian Welcome Dinner where anticipation builds for the epic rides ahead.
- Meet an EF representative at the airport.
- Transfer to your hotel in the central Dolomites region (about 3 hours) to check in and explore your surroundings.
- Raise a glass of beer or wine while you get to know your fellow riders and Tour Directors during a Welcome Orientation.
- Enjoy a Welcome Dinner and toast to the adventure to come.
Note: Airport transfers are included for travelers who book flights with EF Adventures. If you book your own flights, airport transfers may be available for a fee upon request.
Day 3: Sella Ronda cycling
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
It’s here! You’ve made it to your first morning in the Dolomites, home to some of the planet’s most dramatic cycling terrain. Today you’ll tackle the renowned Sella Ronda—a circuit that's become a pilgrimage for cyclists worldwide. This famous loop weaves around the massive Sella mountain group, connecting four distinct passes: Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella, and Gardena. Each pass reveals different characters of the Dolomites—from Campolongo’s sweeping curves through green valleys to Pordoi’s rocky summit, then Sella’s towering limestone walls and Gardena’s forested switchbacks. For those choosing the shorter ride, you'll experience the first half of this circuit, climbing through Campolongo and conquering Pordoi—the day’s highest point—before swapping your bike for the support van. The longer route completes the full circle, adding the dramatic descents and climbs through all four passes. Either way, you’ll understand why this route draws riders from every continent.
Ride options:
- Option A: 14.7 miles, 3,583 ft elevation gain
- Option B: 37.5 miles, 5,853 ft elevation gain
- Explore the iconic passes around the Sella massif—Campolongo and Pordoi for all riders, plus Sella and Gardena for those who want to push further.
- Dig into dinner at a cozy mountain town restaurant and celebrate your incredible first day of riding.
Day 4: Biking Passi Giau, Falzarego & Valparola
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Dinner
Yesterday was your introduction to Dolomites cycling—today things get serious. You’ll tackle passes that showcase this region's diversity and serve up significantly more challenging terrain. The ride begins with a climb toward Passo Giau, where forests give way to open slopes revealing jagged limestone peaks and sweeping views of the Ampezzo basin. Once you reach the summit, those who have opted for the shorter ride can hop in the support van. Everyone else will continue through Passo Falzarego where bunkers, trenches, and tunnels carved into the rock tell stories of WWI battles fought at these heights, then climb to Passo Valparola through high-altitude meadows before returning to your hotel. Tonight, you’ll experience something truly unique to this corner of Italy—an authentic Ladin dinner. The Ladin people are descendants of ancient Roman settlers who developed their own language and customs, creating a culture that blends Italian, Austrian, and Swiss influences. Expect hearty mountain fare like canederli (bread dumplings), speck-wrapped specialties, and traditional pasta dishes that reflect this tri-cultural heritage.
Ride options:
- Option A: 15.1 miles, 3,907 ft elevation gain
- Option B: 37.8 miles, 6,467 ft elevation gain
- Climb to Passo Giau’s spectacular alpine viewpoint at 7,346 feet.
- Refuel at Rifugio Nuvolau, where your included local treat tasting comes with million-dollar views.

- Experience authentic Ladin culture tonight with dinner featuring unique recipes passed down through generations of mountain families.
Bormio2 nights
Day 5: Travel to the Italian Alps & Passo dello Stelvio biking
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Next up: the Italian Alps, a region of massive, glaciated peaks and high-altitude wilderness that has tested cyclists (and climbers) for generations. Once you arrive, you’ll face one of cycling’s most well-known rides: Passo dello Stelvio. You’ll tackle what many consider the ultimate test—48 numbered switchbacks that spiral upward to 9,045 feet, making this the highest paved pass in the Eastern Alps. This is the mountain that has defined cycling greatness since 1953 when Fausto Coppi launched his career-defining attack during the Giro d’Italia. For those choosing today’s shorter ride option, reaching the summit with its panoramic views across the Ortler Alps (Italy’s highest mountain range outside of Mont Blanc) is your finish line, while those choosing the longer option will experience the thrilling descent—a fast, technical ride with sweeping switchbacks that offers a completely different perspective of the mountain’s terrain. By evening, you and your fellow riders will be settled at your new hotel in Bormio, a charming alpine town famous for its thermal springs and mountain hospitality.
Ride options:
- Option A: 18.8 miles, 6,316 ft elevation gain
- Option B: 32.6 miles, 6,381 ft elevation gain
- Travel from the Dolomites to the Italian Alps, trading limestone cliffs for granite giants.
- Test yourself on Passo dello Stelvio, a climb long regarded as the ultimate measure of a cyclist’s grit.
- Add on the exhilarating descent, or ride in the support van down to Bormio.
- Check into your mountain hotel in Bormio and recount stories of today’s impressive climb over dinner with your fellow riders.
Day 6: Passo Gavia biking & optional dairy farm visit & evening in Bormio
Included meal: Breakfast
After a huge day yesterday, you have some options. You can take a well-deserved rest day to enjoy your beautiful hotel and explore Bormio’s charming thermal spas at your own pace. Or, if you’re hungry for more high-altitude adventure, tackle Passo Gavia with your fellow riders. This legendary climb has earned its place in Giro d’Italia folklore, cutting through the heart of the Ortler Alps into a landscape where glaciers still cling to the highest peaks. Your ride begins gently through forests and alpine streams, but as you gain elevation, you’ll face narrow switchbacks with views that stretch across untouched wilderness. At 8,700 feet, historic Rifugio Bonetta marks the summit where you can reward yourself with a local treat. For some riders, reaching this rifugio completes the day, while the longer option includes the winding return journey back to the valley floor. This evening, consider joining the optional dairy farm experience—a perfect way to immerse yourself in authentic alpine culture with traditional cheese making, local wine tasting, and a dinner in Bormio to cap it all off.
Ride options:
- Option A: 26.1 miles, 3,389 ft elevation gain
- Option B: 32.2 miles, 5,056 ft elevation gain
- Opt out of today’s rides and enjoy a day in Bormio, relaxing at the hotel and exploring the town on your own.
- Climb Passo Gavia to Rifugio Bonetta at 8,700 feet for stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
- Experience the full Gavia challenge with the demanding return descent to Bormio, or take the support van back to your hotel.
- Join the optional local dairy farm visit with dinner in Bormio, or take the night to do as you please.
Verona1 night
Day 7: Passo del Montirolo biking & travel to Verona
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Farewell dinner
Your final cycling challenge of the tour is here: Passo del Montirolo, widely considered one of the most demanding climbs in all of professional cycling. This mountain has shaped countless Giro d’Italia outcomes with gradients that can reach a leg-burning 18% through narrow switchbacks and dense forests. For those choosing the shorter route today, you’ll enjoy a scenic valley ride that ends before the mountain’s steep pitches begin. The longer option takes on Montirolo’s full fury, climbing through chestnut forests and relentless switchbacks where Marco Pantani and other cycling pros have written their names into history. After your morning on the bike, you’ll grab a quick lunch in Edolo before heading south to Verona, where you can reflect on your epic cycling achievements during a Farewell Dinner with your group.
Ride options:
- Option A: 18.6 miles, 220 ft elevation gain and 2,149 ft loss
- Option B: 37.4 miles, 4,610 ft elevation gain
- Enjoy a scenic valley descent on a ride through the peaceful Italian countryside.
- Take on Montirolo’s notorious gradients, or take the support van to rejoin the group in Edolo.
- Grab an included lunch in Edolo before departing the mountains for Verona.
- Enjoy your Farewell Dinner, raising a glass to new friends, unforgettable rides, and the memories you’ve created together.
Flight home
Day 8: Fly home

- We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
- Beginning in late 2026, passport holders from visa-exempt countries like the U.S. and Canada will need to register for an ETIAS travel authorization to enter certain European countries. Even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these 30 countries without a visa, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you’ll only need to complete the form once.
- All EF Adventures travelers will be responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center.
- If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
- Round-trip flights booked through EF arrive in Venice and depart from Verona.
- Transfers to and from the airport at the beginning and end of the tour are included for travelers who purchased their flights through EF Adventures. If you book your own flights, airport transfers may be available for a fee upon request.
- When you arrive in Venice, an EF Adventures representative will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with an EF Adventures sign or a sign with your name(s). If you don’t see a representative immediately, please be patient and stay in the arrivals area. They may be assisting another traveler who has also just arrived and will be back shortly.

Climate considerations
- The Dolomites have an alpine climate with cool summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures (June to September) typically range from 50°F to 75°F, depending on elevation.
- The Italian Alps around Bormio sit at higher elevations than much of the Dolomites, with valley temperatures ranging from 45°F to 70°F in summer, while the high passes can be 15-20° cooler.
- Weather in the mountains can change quickly, so be prepared for sudden temperature drops, rain, or even snow at higher elevations.
- Layered clothing is essential to adapt to changing weather conditions throughout the day.
- Please be aware that you will be traveling to altitudes as high as 9,045 feet above sea level. These high altitudes can sometimes cause breathing difficulties for travelers who have heart problems or respiratory ailments. If you suffer from any of these conditions, please speak to your doctor regarding any potential health risks.
Physical activity & tour pace questions
- EF Adventures and the Tour Directors who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage handling assistance to travelers on tour. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
- When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
- When you come across wild animals on tour, take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart: Don't touch or feed them, and maintain a respectful distance. The animals you encounter on your trip should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior.
- Furthermore, avoid buying exploitative animal products, like crafts made from animal parts or products tested on animals.
- If you feel we aren’t meeting any of these commitments, please let us know.
