9 days | 13 days with Bodø, Lofoten Islands & Oslo region extension |
- Group size
- 6–20 travelers
Unreal scenery and unforgettable adventure in the land of the fjords.
From quaint, Viking-era waterside villages to dramatic, glacier-carved valleys, Norway’s raw natural beauty is as extensive as its thousand-plus fjords. You’ll start your adventure in the gateway to fjord country, Bergen, whose ochre- and dandelion-colored old wooden homes that dot the thousand-year-old harbor inspired Disney’s Frozen. Get your first taste of Norway’s majestic mountains as you hike one of Bergen’s seven peaks, Mt. Fløyen. Feel the fresh sea breeze as you kayak through the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord, a narrow, practically pristine strip of water encased by staggering mountains on either side. Make your way to the Sognefjord region—home to Norway’s longest fjord—and get your adrenaline going on a glacier trek along the Jostedalsbreen Ice Cap, the largest ice cap in mainland Europe. Then, experience firsthand why Voss is often referred to as the adventure capital of Norway as you zipline through the Flåm Valley, gravel bike along the twisting Rallarvegen road, and defy rapids on the pristine Raundalselva River. Along the way, rewards come in the form of breathtaking views, rejuvenating fjordside sauna sessions, and the most Norwegian of them all—cold plunges in fresh glacier water.

Itinerary

Overnight flight1 night
Day 1: Fly to Bergen
You’ve double checked your packing list, done a few spins in your new walking shoes, and downloaded enough movies to get you through your overnight flight to Bergen. Make your way to the airport and settle into your flight to Norway. The week ahead is an exciting one, but try and get some sleep so you’ll be fresh and ready for the adventure ahead.
Bergen 2 nights
Day 2: Arrival in Bergen
Included meal: Welcome dinner
Welcome to Bergen, the gateway to Norway’s fjords and the country’s second-largest city. The storybook old Bryggen wharf was a trade center for nearly a thousand years, and its colorful wooden townhomes are so scenic, they inspired the kingdom of Arendelle in Disney’s Frozen. Stretch your legs after the long flight as you make your way around the UNESCO World Heritage Site’s narrow cobbled streets, lined with local artisan shops and galleries, before getting to know your fellow travelers over your first group dinner of the trip. Ease into Norway time and get ready to warm up your legs on tomorrow’s hike.
- Meet an EF representative at the Bergen airport and hop on a 30-minute transfer to your hotel in the city.
- Toast with a glass of beer or wine while getting to know your fellow adventurers and Tour Director during a Welcome Orientation.
- Keep the bonding going before a group Welcome Dinner in town.
Note: Airport transfers are included for travelers who book flights with EF Adventures. If you book your own flights, airport transfers may be available for a fee upon request.
Day 3: Bergen walking tour and Mt. Fløyen hike
Included meal: Breakfast
Your morning in Bergen begins on foot. A local guide leads you through the city’s most storied quarters—past the leaning, colorful facades of Bryggen Wharf, a UNESCO World Heritage site where Hanseatic merchants once built Bergen’s fortunes through Baltic Sea trade; along the harborside Fish Market; down Skostredet’s steep cobbled pitch; and out to Bergenhus Fortress, where stone ramparts overlook the harbor mouth. You’ll then board the iconic Fløibanen Funicular from the heart of the city and ride up to the summit station atop Mt. Fløyen at roughly 1,043 feet, where the fjord-laced city below already feels like another world. The trail climbs steadily through birch woodland and open heathland toward Blåmanen at approximately 1,485 feet, with sweeping views back across Bergen’s harbor and the surrounding fjords.

The Nærøyfjord spans an impressive 220 square miles and is one of the longest arms of the Sognefjord, which stretches nearly 126 miles inland from the coast north of Bergen. You'll start the day in Gudvangen, an old village nestled in the heart of fjord country, before getting out on the water for a four-hour kayaking session—roughly two to two-and-a-half hours of active paddling—through the UNESCO World Heritage-listed fjord. Paddle past historical fjord settlements, ancient Viking graveyards, and bucolic, farm-strewn countryside, feeling the faint spray from waterfalls rushing down the forest-covered mountainsides as you discover hidden spots only reachable by kayak. A fjord-side picnic lunch breaks up the day before you hop on a ferry and head to the Sognefjord region—home to the country's deepest fjord and beautifully untamed valleys—where a group dinner awaits at your new hotel.

Day 5: Jostedalsbreen Ice Cap glacier hike
Included meals: Breakfast, Light Lunch
The Jostedalsbreen Ice Cap is the largest in mainland Europe, and today you’ll hike across one of its mighty arms—either Nigardsbreen or Austdalsbreen, depending on the time of year of your tour. The adventure begins with a short boat crossing to the glacier’s edge, followed by an approach on foot before you strap on crampons and helmets and step onto the ice itself. Your guide will lead you through a blue-ice world of spiraling ice towers and narrow, deep crevasses, navigating terrain that shifts from rocky approach paths to the glacier’s more challenging and steeper interior sections. The route pushes far enough into the ice to reach some of the most impressive formations on the glacier, with views of the snow-covered Jostedalsbreen Ice Cap and the upper glacier as your reward. A pre-packed picnic lunch is enjoyed along the way.

- Break for a pre-packed picnic lunch and admire views of the snow-covered Jostedalsbreen and the upper part of Nigardsbreen.

Day 6: Norwegian Glacier Museum, local farm lunch with cheese tasting & travel to Voss region
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Tasting, Dinner

You’ll have time this morning to stroll through hands-on exhibitions and even experiment with thousand-year-old ice from Supphellebreen, a branch of the main Jostedalsbreen glacier. Then it’s on to one of the day’s highlights: a visit to a working local farm near Flåm, where you’ll be welcomed with an apéritif in front of the farmhouse before sitting down to a cheese-based lunch featuring homemade varieties, local snacks, and a light meal—all with the farm’s spectacular surroundings as your backdrop. From there, you’ll continue on to the Voss region, dubbed the adventure capital of Norway for good reason.

- Join your fellow adventurers for a group dinner once you arrive at your new hotel in the Voss region.
Day 7: Ziplining & gravel biking through the Flåm Valley
Included meal: Breakfast
The Flåm Valley is home to one of the steepest and most scenic train rides in the world, and that’s exactly how the day begins—a 45-minute ride from Voss to Myrdal, climbing through tunnels and past waterfalls before depositing you at the top of the valley. From there, you’ll work your way back down in two very different ways. First: Scandinavia’s longest zipline, a 4,531-foot flight from the mountain plateau down to Kårdal at speeds up to 62 MPH. Second: you’ll saddle up for the Rallarvegen gravel bike ride—10.7 miles of descent along the legendary Navvy Road, originally carved by hand by the workers who built the Flåm Railway at the turn of the 20th century. The route drops nearly 1,834 feet from the plateau to the valley floor, with rugged peaks on either side, waterfalls threading down dark cliff faces, and the Aurlandsfjord coming into full view as you near the bottom. The afternoon is yours to explore the tiny village of Flåm (population 350), whose roots date to the 1300s and whose stave church ranks among the smallest in Norway.

Day 8: Whitewater rafting on Raundalselva River, sauna experience & Farewell Dinner
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
The final full day opens with a morning on the water—specifically, the crystal-clear Raundalselva River, which runs through one of the few remaining truly unspoiled wilderness areas in Europe. Under the guidance of skilled local guides, you’ll navigate a series of Class III-IV rapids through a beautiful, isolated gorge surrounded by wild forest. Depending on water conditions, rafting may take place on the Stranda River instead, where the level of difficulty is comparable—highlights there include powerful named rapids like “Laila,” “Svanhild,” and “Elevator,” plus a calmer final stretch where you can let the current carry you. On the Raundalselva, the prize is “Timberhole”—the largest rafting rapid in Europe. All necessary equipment, including wetsuits, life jackets, helmets, and neoprene shoes, is provided. The afternoon winds down with a rejuvenating wood-fired sauna session at the hotel, complete with outdoor Jacuzzis and a cold plunge in the river.
Whitewater rafting on Raundalselva River

You’ve crisscrossed the fjords, gone glacier trekking through challenging crevasses, and paddled through UNESCO-listed parks. Now that you’ve mastered a handful of the country’s thousand-plus fjords, there’s another part of Norway you really shouldn’t miss: the Arctic Circle. Extend your journey with a 4-night getaway to Bodø, the second-largest town in Northern Norway, and the jagged archipelago of the Lofoten Islands. Soak up a different side of the Nordic country’s unparalleled natural beauty cruising the world’s strongest tidal current in Bodø before exploring fishing villages in the arctic fjords of the dramatic Lofoten Islands. After traveling so far, why not stay a bit longer and see what the jagged mountains of Northern Norway have to offer—especially when the Midnight Sun means longer, light-drenched days. Note: This extension is only available on departures from June through August due to ferry availability.
Bodø1 night
Day 9: Fly to Bodø & RIB boat tour of Saltstraumen Maelstrom
Included meal: Breakfast
Hop on a flight to Bodø, crossing the Arctic Circle and landing in Nordland county, where the Midnight Sun means the sky stays light around the clock in summer. The city has rightfully earned the title of European Capital of Culture for its mix of Arctic street art, cutting-edge cultural centers, and deep roots in Indigenous Sami culture—but today's main event is out on the water. You'll board a high-performance inflatable RIB boat for a two-hour sea safari to Saltstraumen, one of the Wild Wonders of Europe and the world's strongest tidal current. Every six hours, more than 400 million cubic meters of seawater push through a narrow strait, generating whirlpools and speeds up to 20 knots—and you'll experience it up close. Day 10: Ferry to Moskenes, Reinebringen hike & Nusfjord visit
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
After a 3-to-3.5-hour ferry crossing from Bodø to Moskenes, you'll arrive on the Lofoten Islands—an archipelago of dazzling mountains, pristine coastal trails, and crayon-colored fishing villages. The day's centerpiece is the Reinebringen hike, one of the most iconic summit walks in Scandinavia. The trail climbs steeply from sea level via 1,978 stone steps laid into the mountainside, switchbacking upward through low coastal scrub and bare, wind-scoured rock to a summit at 1,620 feet. Those opting for the longer route begin in the village of Reine itself; those taking the shorter option join the trail at the Reinehalsen viewpoint further up the road. At the top, the Reinefjord and Kjerkfjord stretch out in every direction—jagged peaks plunging directly into dark water, the red and ochre fishing huts of Reine far below. The afternoon brings a visit to Nusfjord, one of Lofoten's oldest and best-preserved fishing villages, huddled at the edge of a secluded valley by the sea, with free time for lunch.

Henningsvær sits on a cluster of small islands connected by narrow bridges at the southwestern tip of the Lofoten archipelago—a fishing village that has quietly become one of northern Norway’s most compelling stops. Today brings a guided walking tour through the village’s compact streets, where brightly painted rorbu (traditional fishermen’s cabins) line the harbor and the surrounding peaks drop sharply into the water on every side. You’ll visit Galleri Lofoten, one of northern Norway’s most respected contemporary art galleries, before free time to explore on your own—browse the independent shops, find a table at a harborside café, or simply take in the scale of the mountains rising straight out of the sea.

As an active individual themselves, your Tour Director will participate in many of the same adventure activities as you and is trained in safety procedures to ensure the well-being of the group.
- One of the benefits of traveling with EF Adventures is our on tour emergency support team.
- Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
- This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
- As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
- Norway is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and 6 hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
- When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.
- When you travel with EF Adventures, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
- Travel, when done responsibly, can have an enormous socioeconomic impact on communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at small businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
- Prepare for your trip: Be aware of monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market; learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette; and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
- When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
- EF Adventures encourages travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single-use plastics. You can cut back on generating plastic waste by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
- When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
- When you come across wild animals on tour, take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart: Don’t touch or feed them, and maintain a respectful distance. The animals you encounter on your trip should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior.
- Furthermore, avoid buying exploitative animal products, like crafts made from tortoiseshell or meals such as shark fin soup.
- If you feel we aren’t meeting any of these commitments, please let us know.
