Day 3: San Juan de Gaztelugatxe hike & Bilbao walking tour
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
The Basque coast has a way of making you feel like you've wandered onto a film set—and in this case, you actually have. Your morning begins with a drive from Bilbao to the coastal village of Bakio, gateway to the UNESCO-recognized Urdaibai Bioreserve and the starting point for today's hike. The trail traces the rugged shoreline of the Bay of Biscay, climbing steadily through windswept coastal scrub to the summit of Kastillo—a rocky promontory with panoramic views in both directions. Those taking the shorter route finish here. Those continuing will descend all the way to sea level before tackling the 241-step climb to the hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, the islet that served as Dragonstone in Season 7 of Game of Thrones. At the top, tradition calls for ringing the bell three times and making a wish. Back in Bilbao, your Tour Director leads a walking tour through the Casco Viejo before a stop at a local wine bar for a pintxos tasting.

The Picos de Europa may not be Spain's highest range, but few mountain landscapes match its drama. Shoehorned between three great river gorges and straddling the provinces of Asturias, León, and Cantabria, these limestone peaks rise vertically from deep gorges where car-free villages cling to impossibly steep slopes. After arriving in Poncebos, your hike begins with a crossing over the stone bridge of Puente La Jaya, above the Cares River, before climbing steadily through ancient chestnut trees and rocky terrain toward Bulnes village. The shorter route follows the more accessible trail to Bulnes de Abajo, the lower section of this car-free hamlet—reachable only on foot or by funicular since 2001. Those taking the longer route press on to Bulnes de Arriba, or El Castillo, perched at 2,300 feet, before a steep descent back to Poncebos.

After a drive from the Asturias region to Ponferrada—where you'll have free time to explore the cobblestone streets and find lunch on your own—you'll continue to Las Herrerías for the day's main event: one of the most iconic climbs on the entire Camino. The trail ascends through forested terrain, passing through the hamlet of La Faba before crossing into Galicia—a milestone that carries real weight for pilgrims. The village of O Cebreiro, perched at 4,000 feet, rewards the effort with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside, Celtic circular palloza houses, and a 9th-century church that has welcomed pilgrims for over a thousand years.

Day 7: Palas de Rei to Melide hike, Melide walking tour & optional Galician wine tasting with dinner
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
Today's journey follows the Camino Francés from Palas de Rei—a town with roots stretching back to the Visigoth king Witiza in the 8th century—to Melide, where the Camino Primitivo and the Camino del Norte converge with the French Way. Those taking the longer route set out from Palas de Rei itself, following well-conserved paths through eucalyptus groves and rolling Galician farmland, with the trail descending gently through stone-walled hamlets toward Melide. Those opting for the shorter route join the trail at Ponte Campaña, hiking the final stretch together with the rest of the group. In Melide, your Tour Director leads a walking tour past the Santa Maria de Melide church and the Cristo de San Xoan de Furelos before treating the group to a tasting of the town's celebrated sweet—the irresistible almendrados. Santiago de Compostela 2 nights
Day 8: Hiking into Santiago de Compostela & guided city tour
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
What a day. This morning you'll set out from O Ceadoiro on the penultimate stretch of the Camino Francés—a point-to-point hike that threads through the quiet Galician countryside, past stone villages, traditional hórreos (raised granaries), and the roadside chapel at Santa Irene, before finishing in San Paio. From there, a short ride brings you to Monte do Gozo—the "Mount of Joy"—where pilgrims have climbed for centuries to catch their first glimpse of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral rising above the city. The descent into the city is gradual and deeply satisfying, the medieval spires growing larger with every step. Upon arrival, your local guide leads you through the UNESCO-listed Old Town: the magnificent cathedral, the Franciscan Monastery's Friars Minor Pharmacy (one of the world's oldest operating pharmacies, dating to 1317), and the Gothic-Renaissance Rector's Palace. The day ends with dinner in Santiago—a fitting celebration of everything you've accomplished.

Day 9: Santo Estevo de Lires to Finisterre hike
Included meal: Breakfast
Though you've completed the traditional Camino Francés to Santiago de Compostela, your journey isn't over yet. Today you'll hike a bonus section known as the Camino Finisterre—Finis Terrae, "the end of the earth." Ancient Romans believed this westernmost point of Spain to be where the sun sank into the Atlantic Ocean, and even now, standing here, it's easy to understand why. The trail begins by descending from Santo Estevo de Lires toward the coast, where Playa do Rostro appears first—a dramatic beach of crashing waves and rugged cliffs. The route continues through small Galician hamlets before arriving at Langosteira Beach, a sweeping crescent of sand that offers one final panoramic view of the coastline. Those taking the shorter route finish in Finisterre, with free time to explore the fishing town and find lunch on your own. Those continuing on the longer route press on to the Faro de Fisterra lighthouse, perched on a rocky promontory at Cabo Finisterre—where land, sea, and sky converge at the symbolic end of the Camino.

This path trades mountainous terrain for scenic shorelines and a quieter atmosphere, with fewer pilgrims than the routes you've traveled so far. Your hike begins in Caminha, a historic town known for its medieval architecture and picturesque town square, and follows coastal trails northward to Vila Praia de Âncora. Along the way, you'll pass the Chapel of Santo Isidoro, Moledo beach, and the small coastal fort of Forte do Cão before arriving in this charming seaside village, where fishing boats bob in the harbor and the smell of grilled seafood fills the air. - This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
- As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.

- Portugal is on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and five hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
- When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm in Spain and 5pm in Portugal.
- When you travel with EF Adventures, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
- Travel, when done responsibly, can have an enormous socioeconomic impact on communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at small businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
- Prepare for your trip: Be aware of monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market; learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette; and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
- When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
- EF Adventures encourages travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single-use plastics. You can cut back on generating plastic waste by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
- When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
- When you come across wild animals on tour, take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart: Don't touch or feed them, and maintain a respectful distance. The animals you encounter on your trip should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior.
- Furthermore, avoid buying exploitative animal products, like crafts made from animal parts or products tested on animals.
- If you feel we aren’t meeting any of these commitments, please let us know.
